Musical Fidelity announced the M6x 250.7 on 29 September 2022 as a seven-channel power amplifier for home theatre, part of the M6x family of multi-channel amps in which five-channel and eleven-channel versions were also planned. In Britain it launched at GBP 3,099. The company framed the design around delivering rated output to every channel at once rather than quoting a single driven channel.

Key specs that matter

Each of the seven channels is rated at 250 W into 4 ohm, with a peak figure of 400 W. THD+N is listed at 0.003% measured at 100 W, and the signal to noise ratio reaches 105 dB at 1 kHz referenced to 200 W. Response runs from 20 Hz to 20 kHz within 0.5 dB. Input sensitivity is 700 mV on the RCA sockets and 1.4 V on the balanced XLR sockets. Maximum draw from the mains is 2,500 W, falling below 0.5 W in standby, and the unit is set internally for 230 V or 115 V, with a 100 V build available as an option. The chassis is 450 mm wide, 195 mm high and 435 mm deep, with a weight of 32.5 kg.

Engineering and use context

Amplification is class A/B throughout. Seven separate power modules sit behind two toroidal transformers that Musical Fidelity designs in-house and calls Super Silent. There are no cooling fans - every module carries its own heat sink mounted on the side, so the amplifier stays quiet in a cinema room during low-level passages. The enclosure is all metal, finished in black or silver, with a bevelled front plate milled from aluminium and four chrome feet. On the rear, each channel has both an XLR and an RCA input without a selector switch, plus an RCA through output, and the speaker terminals are gold-plated multi-way posts. Trigger in and out sockets let the amp power up together with other components, and small LEDs on the front show the status of each channel next to the standby and power buttons.

Pairing

The balanced inputs suit an AV processor or preamp-processor with XLR pre-outs, and the seven channels cover a 5.1.2 or 7.1 layout without a second amplifier. The through outputs allow the same signal to be passed to another power amplifier, for example to bi-amp the front pair. With its full rating available on every channel into low impedances, the amp can drive low-impedance floorstanders across the front and surround positions, and the trigger link keeps it in step with the processor.
