The M6x 250.11 is an eleven-channel Class A/B power amplifier in the M6 series from Musical Fidelity, aimed at home cinema systems with Dolby Atmos height channels. The M6x multichannel range also includes five-channel and seven-channel versions and the 250.4/2. Construction is modular, with a dedicated amplifier stage for every channel, and the front is a custom aluminium extrusion available in a choice of black or silver.

Key specs that matter

The channels are not all equal. Three main sections, meant for centre, left front and right front, are rated at 250 W each into 4 ohm continuous with 400 W peak. The other eight effect channels deliver 150 W each into 4 ohm, with 250 W peak. THD+N is 0.003 percent at 100 W on every channel, and response holds within 0.5 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Signal to noise ratio at 1 kHz and 200 W is 105 dB on the main channels and 103 dB on the effect channels, while damping factor is above 300 on the main channels and 80 on the rest. Input sensitivity is 700 mV on RCA and 1.4 V on XLR. The chassis measures 435 x 205 x 430 mm and weighs 35.5 kg, or 39 kg in its carton, and maximum consumption is 3,000 W.

Engineering and use context

Splitting the output into two power classes gives the three front channels the larger stages, while surround and height channels use the smaller ones. The heat sinks are sized so the amplifier needs no fan, which keeps cooling silent. Each channel has its own gold-plated RCA socket and balanced XLR socket, so either single-ended or balanced cabling can be used from the source. Speaker terminals are gold plated and isolated and each of the eleven pairs is compatible with bananas, spades and unterminated cable. A trigger input and a trigger output link power-up to the other components in the chain, and standby draw is under 0.5 W. Mains voltage is set internally to 230 V or 115 V, with 100 V available as an option, at 50 or 60 Hz.

Pairing

Eleven channels cover a 7.1.4 speaker layout, or a 5.1.6 layout, when combined with a powered subwoofer fed from the processor. The main trio can drive demanding low-impedance front speakers, and the effect channels suit smaller surround and ceiling speakers. It needs an AV processor or receiver with eleven preamplifier outputs, in RCA or XLR form.
