The BD-325 is the more powerful of the two BD series power amplifiers from Bryston, the company's first range built with Class D output stages. Like the BD-225, it uses a chassis that can be fitted with one to six independent channels, so one model serves stereo, mono and multichannel systems. The amplifiers are built in Canada.

Key specs that matter

Rated output is 325 W RMS per channel into 8 ohms and 650 W into 4 ohms. All channels together sustain 1,500 W continuously and 4,500 W in 100 ms bursts. Input sensitivity is 2 V, gain is 29 dB and signal to noise measures 105 dB at full power. Into 6 ohms, the -3 dB bandwidth runs from 1 Hz to 50 kHz. The linear power supply holds 144,000 µF of storage capacitance. There are XLR and RCA inputs and a 12 V trigger, and the amplifier runs on 115 or 230 V. Its case, 133 mm tall, 450 mm wide and 425 mm deep, weighs 26 kg.

Engineering and use context

Bryston's own Class D modules switch the output transistors with pulse width modulation, while the power comes from a toroidal transformer and linear supply rather than a switch-mode supply. Compared with the BD-225, the BD-325 raises the per-channel output by 100 W into 8 ohms, increases the storage capacitance by a third and adds 2 kg, while keeping the same case size. Its input sensitivity is slightly higher than that of the BD-225, because the higher output requires more input voltage at the same gain. The configurable chassis allows up to six channels, so a single amplifier can drive a complete 5.1 speaker layout or be ordered as a stereo or mono unit for a two-channel system. The warranty runs 20 years. Because it shares the gain of the BD-225, the two models can be mixed in one system without level differences between channels.

Pairing

With its high 4 ohm rating, the BD-325 drives large low-impedance floorstanders such as the Bryston Middle T10, whose recommended range extends to 1,000 W. Preamplifiers and AV processors connect over XLR or RCA. When all six channels run flat out, their combined demand is above the all-channel rating, so a fully loaded chassis cannot give every channel its maximum at once.

Alternatives

The Bryston BD-225 is the lower-powered BD model, rated at 225 W into 8 ohms and 450 W into 4 ohms with 1.5 V input sensitivity and a 24 kg weight.
