The 9B Cubed, or 9B3, is a modular multi-channel power amplifier from Bryston's Cubed Series, made in Canada. It holds up to five self-contained channels and is offered in three, four and five channel configurations, so it can serve a front stage, a surround setup or a bi-amped stereo pair from one chassis. Every channel carries its own fully independent power supply, which means heavy output on one channel does not pull down the others.

Key specs that matter

Each channel delivers 200 W into 8 ohm and 300 W into 4 ohm. Response runs from under 1 Hz to 100 kHz at -3 dB, with THD plus noise under 0.005% across 20 Hz to 20 kHz at rated power into 8 ohm. Noise is quoted at -110 dB through XLR and below -108 dB through RCA. Unbalanced input impedance is 30 kohm, while the balanced input shows 30 kohm on the positive leg and 6 kohm on the negative leg. Gain switches between 23 dB and 29 dB. The chassis is 432 or 483 mm wide, 147 mm high and 445 mm deep, or 483 mm with front handles, and weighs 29.5 kg.

Engineering and use context

Like all Cubed amplifiers it uses the patented Salomie input circuit. A network monitoring and control interface is built into every unit, and through the amplifier's own web page an owner can check temperature, see overdrive warnings and mute individual channels. Cooling relies on convection with no fans, and standby consumption is below 500 mW. Both single-ended and balanced inputs are provided on each channel. Faceplates are available in silver or black. Bryston covers the 9B3 with a 10-year warranty. The modular build means each channel sits on its own module inside the case, and the web page for monitoring is reached over the home network rather than through a separate app.

Pairing

Because the channel count is chosen at purchase, the 9B3 fits systems where one chassis should drive several speakers - for example a three-channel front array under a surround processor, or four channels for bi-amping a stereo pair with separate bass and upper sections. A source unit with XLR outputs lets the quieter XLR path be used, and the switchable gain helps align levels with processors that differ in output voltage. It handles typical low impedance home speakers without strain.
