The A 3100 HV succeeds the A 3000 HV as the stereo power amplifier within T+A's HV line, and switches between stereo and bridged mono operation. T+A says the design received more than 270 targeted optimisations over its predecessor, including newer components and revised board routing, and it keeps the dual mono layout typical of the range, with the two channels built on isolated boards.
Key specs that matter
In High Power Mode continuous output is 300 W per channel into 8 ohm and 500 W per channel into 4 ohm. Pulse ratings reach 380 W and 700 W per channel in stereo, or 430 W and 800 W in mono, into 8 and 4 ohm. A High Current Mode gives up to 75 W of pure Class A or up to 140 W of Class AB in mono. Frequency response is 0.5 Hz to 180 kHz at +0/-3 dB and power bandwidth is 1 Hz to 150 kHz. Slew rate is 60 V/us, damping factor exceeds 65, noise stays more than 115 dB down and distortion stays below 0.03 %. The case measures 17 x 46 x 46 cm and weighs 38 kg.
Engineering and use context
The High Current Mode holds a raised quiescent current so the output transistors work within a wider Class A range. High current circuits, output stages and the mains supply are isolated in shielded compartments separated by machined aluminium walls, and conductors across the boards and output stages are routed in mirrored symmetry to cancel electromagnetic feedback. Voltage and current amplification stages are galvanically separated from each other, and the output transistors are thermally tracked so the amplifier keeps what T+A calls thermal equilibrium. Power comes from a hermetically sealed 1000 W toroidal transformer, with twelve oversized electrolytic capacitors in parallel giving 120,000 uF of filtering behind it. An optional external PS 3100 HV power supply can take over, relieving the internal supply of the output stage load. Mains input is 110 to 120 V at 60 Hz or 220 to 240 V at 50 Hz, rated at 1500 W, and standby draw is 0.5 W. Speaker connections are rhodium plated brass terminals, and buyers choose a silver or titan housing with a black heat sink.
Pairing
Because the chassis matches the other full width HV components, the amplifier stacks with the P 3100 HV preamplifier or the PSD 3100 HV preamplifier with streaming and DAC. A second A 3100 HV switched to mono means one amplifier per loudspeaker.
Alternatives
The T+A A 3000 HV came first as the HV stereo power amplifier, with Class A MOSFET driver stages and front panel meters showing output in watts and decibels.
