Engineering and use context

McIntosh made the MC830 output stage push-pull complementary and direct coupled. The chassis follows an open layout with a footprint close to that of the MA252 integrated amplifier, and its front, top and rear surfaces are polished stainless steel, with a black glass front panel and silver trim. Monogrammed Heatsinks keep the output devices at operating temperature. Power Guard tracks the output waveform and trims the incoming signal on the fly to stop the amplifier from being driven into clipping, and Sentry Monitor switches off the power transistors before current climbs past a safe limit, without a fuse, and resets automatically. A fast Dual Scale Watt meter with blue lighting, reading power for both 8 ohm and 4 ohm speaker loads, and a switch for its illumination sits on the front, and the logo and knobs are also lit.

Pairing

Each MC830 carries one balanced and one unbalanced input, so it works with preamplifiers offering either output type, and two units are needed for stereo. McIntosh presents a pair of MC830s with the matching C8 vacuum tube preamplifier as a complete amplification chain for a turntable, CD player or streaming player. Speaker cables attach to gold-plated Solid Cinch binding posts. Power Control ports let the amplifier switch on with other McIntosh components, and a selectable Auto Off function shuts it down after 30 minutes without a signal.
