The MB-450 Series III Signature is a valve monoblock power amplifier made by hand in the United States by VTL, and it is built to order with delivery estimated at three months. The Series III edition of the long-running MB-450 platform reworks the entire signal path, and earlier Series II units can be brought up to this standard at the factory.
Key specs that matter
Rated power per monoblock is 425 W in tetrode or 225 W in triode into its 5 ohm load setting, over 20 Hz to 20 kHz at less than 2.5 percent THD, and it accepts loads from 4 to 8 ohm. Sensitivity is variable between 1 V and 2 V depending on the damping factor position, with a 45 kilohm input impedance. Signal to noise is specified at -110 dB, 120 Hz. The amplifier consumes 300 W idling and 1000 W at full output. Fusing uses a 15 A slow-blow mains fuse on 100 or 120 V and 8 A on 220 or 240 V, a 2.5 A plate fuse and a 0.75 A screen fuse. Width is 47 cm, depth 45.7 cm and height 23 cm, and one unit weighs 42 kg unpacked.
Engineering and use context
Eight 6550 or KT-88 output valves are fitted to each chassis, with one 12AT7 and one 12BH7 as small-signal valves. A fully balanced differential topology runs from the input through to the lower impedance push-pull output stage, and a JFET current source keeps single-ended operation close to a valve stage. Global negative feedback is absent, replaced by a short, fully balanced local loop that stays unconditionally stable without capacitor compensation. The balanced Signature output transformer has increased interleaving and coupling for wider bandwidth. A four-position Damping Factor control sets the output impedance. Adjustable, precision-regulated bias and screen supplies hold the output tube operating point constant when the mains fluctuates. Operation is managed by a microprocessor, with autobias and fault sensing that protect against output tube failure and remove the need for matched tubes, plus inrush current limiting and a Standby Mute mode with reduced tube current. Tetrode or triode can be selected by switch. Mundorf silver oil capacitors carry the audio signal, the chassis is rack mountable, and VTL offers the fascia in black as well as silver.
Pairing
Two monoblocks form a stereo pair, and the balanced input can take its signal from the VTL TL-7.5 Series III Reference preamplifier.
Alternatives
The VTL MB-185 Series III Signature is the smaller Series III monoblock, built on the same circuit platform with eight EL34 valves.
