The Ovation MA 8.3 S is a monoblock amplifier by the German manufacturer AVM, introduced with the stereo SA 8.3 S to mark the company's 40th anniversary as part of the Ovation S series. It combines an anode-follower tube input stage with fully balanced circuitry and class A/AB output stages. A pair was priced at EUR 50,449 at launch, and each unit is shipped in a flight case.
Key specs that matter
AVM rates output at more than 600 W into 8 ohms, more than 1,100 W into 4 ohms and more than 1,800 W into 2 ohms. The amplification factor is 30, equal to 29.5 dB. Input sensitivity is 2.1 V for 1,000 W into 4 ohms on both connectors, with an input impedance of 20 kOhm on RCA and 40 kOhm on XLR. Distortion at 25 W into 4 ohms is below 0.02 percent and intermodulation below 0.01 percent, with noise more than 94 dB(A) under the signal. Small-signal frequency response runs from under 1 Hz to over 100 kHz at -3 dB, and power bandwidth at 25 W spans 5 Hz to more than 50 kHz. Rise time into 4 ohms is 10 microseconds, slew rate exceeds 15 V per microsecond and the damping factor into 8 ohms is above 400.
Engineering and use context
The whole signal path is DC-coupled, and automatic offset compensation holds the output free of DC. Dual differential inputs accept either RCA or XLR sources. The mains supply is rated at 230 V and 50 Hz with a maximum draw of 3,500 W, while the amplifier consumes 120 W when running without a signal and less than 0.5 W in standby. Each monoblock measures 420 x 432 x 253 mm and weighs 42 kg, or 84 kg for a pair. Three front options exist - aluminium in silver, black brushed metal, or a CELLINI version whose fascia is chrome. AVM grants a four-year warranty once the product is registered.
Pairing
The low-impedance ratings mean loudspeakers with low or strongly varying impedance remain within the specified operating range. Other Ovation S components launched earlier - the PAS 8.3 S preamplifier and the MP 8.3 S media player - form a matching front end, and a balanced connection from the preamplifier uses the higher-impedance XLR input. The high maximum mains demand of each unit is worth planning for when both monoblocks share one circuit.
Alternatives
The AVM MA 30.3 mkII is a smaller class A/AB mono power amplifier with a MOS-FET output stage, rated at 300 W.
