The MA 30.3 mkII is a class A/AB mono power amplifier from the German maker AVM, part of its 30.3 series of compact components. It is built around a MOS-FET output stage and is rated at 300 W into a 4 ohm load. The case is lacquered sheet steel with a brushed aluminium front, offered in silver or black. A stereo setup therefore uses a pair, one per loudspeaker. The mkII version received a completely newly developed power supply.
Key specs that matter
Input impedance is 66,000 ohms on the balanced XLR connector and 33,000 ohms on the RCA connector, and both inputs are gold-plated. AVM specifies 97 dB(A) of signal-to-noise, while THD is 0.03 percent. Frequency response reaches from below 5 Hz to 50 kHz. The damping factor into 8 ohms is stated as higher than 500. At full output into 4 ohms the amplifier can draw up to 380 W from the mains, while idle consumption is 32 W and standby consumption is 0.2 W. The chassis measures 230 x 375 x 132 mm.
Engineering and use context
A 550 VA toroidal transformer feeds the circuit, and filter capacitance exceeds 40,000 microfarads. AVM gives the input section and the power stage two separate power supplies, which isolates the sensitive input circuitry from the heavy current drawn by the output devices. Protection circuits monitor for DC voltage at the output, excess temperature and short circuits. Three switch-on modes are available - signal-sensing operation that wakes the amplifier when music arrives, a trigger input for switching by a control line, and continuous operation. With an AVM preamplifier the AIR function (AVM Intelligent Remote) turns the monoblock on and off without a separate trigger cable. The narrow case allows two units to stand side by side on a single shelf.
Pairing
Within the same series, the PAS 30.3 preamplifier offers an MM and MC phono stage, HDMI and several digital and analogue inputs, making it the direct partner for a pair of these monoblocks. Because it accepts both balanced and single-ended signals, the MA 30.3 mkII can be driven from a preamplifier through either XLR or RCA cables, though AVM preamplifiers add the cable-free AIR switching. Bi-wiring terminals give two sets of speaker connections, so loudspeakers with split bass and treble inputs can be wired with separate cable runs from each amplifier.
Alternatives
The AVM Ovation MA 8.3 S is a larger mono power amplifier with a tube input stage, rated above 1,100 W and weighing 42 kg.
