The Ianus QuintEssence is a Class A mono power amplifier from the Ianus series of Aries Cerat, with two chassis per channel. It uses the company's newer-generation TriodeFet output device in a single-stage, single-ended circuit without a driver or input stage, and sits between the Ianus Essentia and the Ianus Geminae in the series. Its US price is USD 90,000.

Key specs that matter

The amplifier produces 65 W into 8 ohms and 100 W into 4 ohms and remains stable down to 1 ohm. Gain is 26 dB, switchable to 22, 18, 14, 10 or 6 dB through a transformer volume control. Inputs are RCA, a TVC input, Aries Cerat's AC link and a true balanced XLR. Bandwidth is 5 Hz to 60 kHz, with the upper limit set deliberately to prevent oscillation, and signal to noise ratio is 110 dB referenced to 0 dB. Damping factor can be switched by the user. Idle consumption is 140 W per channel, depending on bias. Each monoblock measures 520 x 400 x 310 mm (H x W x D) excluding the plinth and weighs 95 kg.

Engineering and use context

With a single-stage layout, the input signal reaches the TriodeFet output device directly through the transformer volume control, so there is no separate voltage amplification stage. A TVC selects taps on a transformer winding to set the level, which lets the QuintEssence work without a separate preamplifier. The switchable gain makes this practical with sources of different output. Being stable into very low loads, the amplifier can deliver current into loudspeakers whose impedance dips far below their nominal rating. The user-switchable damping factor changes how firmly the amplifier controls the woofer, adapting it to different speakers. Each channel occupies two chassis, and the Ianus Essentia below it is rated at 40 W into 8 ohms. With its high idle consumption, the Class A bias produces a lot of heat.

Pairing

Its power and low-impedance stability let the QuintEssence work with many more loudspeakers than single-ended amplifiers of 20 or 25 W, including models of average sensitivity. Aries Cerat DACs such as the Ithaka, with their high output and low impedance, can feed it directly through the TVC input. The four chassis of a stereo pair need a large equipment space.

Alternatives

The Aries Cerat Ianus Geminae is the larger Ianus mono amplifier, rated at 130 W into 8 ohms and 260 W into 4 ohms with 32 dB of gain.
