The H Three M800 Opus II is a mono power amplifier in Heritage Opus II, a product series of the Swiss audio electronics company Orpheus Lab. The Heritage Opus II line was introduced in 2024 with an SACD player, a stereo preamplifier and monoblocks, and the M800 was the power amplifier of that first group.

Key specs that matter

Rated power is 400 W RMS into 8 ohm and 800 W RMS into 4 ohm. Continuous peak output is 2200 W at 28 A, and the instantaneous peak reaches 3600 W with a maximum of 80.8 V and 45 A. Orpheus Lab gives THD+N of 0.0018 percent (-95 dB) at 1 kHz at full 800 W output, a dynamic range above 123 dB and a frequency response from 5 Hz to 90 kHz within +0 and -0.1 dB. Nominal power consumption is 1200 W. Each unit is 440 mm wide, 440 mm deep and 271 mm tall and weighs 56 kg.

Engineering and use context

Twenty-four power MOSFETs form the output section, each set matched by hand and working in Class AB. Bias current is 480 mA, which gives 96 W of thermal idle power per unit, far more than a typical Class AB design runs at rest, so the amplifier stays in its lower distortion region over more of its range. The distortion figure is quoted at the full rated output rather than at 1 W, which is where many amplifiers measure at their worst. The upper response limit is given within a tight tolerance, not at the usual -3 dB point, so the bandwidth is wider than the number suggests when compared with specifications written in the common way. Since each channel is a separate chassis, a stereo pair has two independent supplies and two mains connections, and the units can be placed near their loudspeakers. The case width matches the other Heritage components, so a full system can share one rack format, although two such heavy units need a solid shelf or floor placement.

Pairing

Power that doubles as impedance halves shows a supply that holds up into lower impedances, which suits large floorstanding speakers with low nominal ratings. The H Two 33BD Opus II preamplifier provides the matching control stage, and its balanced output drives the M800 over XLR. Its volume control covers -127.5 dB to +6 dB in 0.5 dB steps through a resistor network built only from metal-film resistors. For sources, the matching Heritage disc player reads SACD and CD and has a USB input for computer files, and its level can be trimmed from -16 dB to 0 dB.

Alternatives

The Orpheus Lab H Three M1400 Opus II is a larger Heritage monoblock rated at 700 W into 8 ohm with a 2400 VA supply.
