The Audia Flight FLS8 is a single-channel amplifier made in Italy as part of the FLS family, the entry point below the Strumento series from which its design draws. Two are required for stereo, and the pair was listed in Australia at AUD 31,800.
Key specs that matter
Rated output is 400 W into 8 ohm and 800 W into 4 ohm, and the maker quotes 1,500 W into 2 ohm measured without current limitation. Frequency response extends from 0.3 Hz to 600 kHz at -3 dB, measured at 1 W RMS, and slew rate exceeds 160 V per microsecond into 8 ohm. Gain is 29 dB, with switchable attenuation settings of 0, -6 and -12 dB, and input impedance is 7.5 kOhm on XLR as well as RCA. The output stage uses 32 power devices.
Engineering and use context
The FLS8 uses a fully balanced topology throughout. For the gain stage Audia Flight uses its own current-feedback circuit running entirely in class A, sealed in epoxy resin inside its own aluminium enclosure to isolate it from interference and keep its discrete parts thermally stable. The main supply is built around a 2,000 VA toroidal audio transformer, itself sealed in epoxy and enclosed within two ferromagnetic shields, and a capacitor bank of 128,000 uF with low-impedance parts. Logic and protection circuitry run from their own 15 VA toroidal transformer, and in total the amplifier contains 12 power supplies. Custom printed circuit boards carry extra high-grade surface copper. Instead of fuses in the signal path, protection relies on a microprocessor that monitors a current sensor. The chassis is custom cast aluminium, CNC finished and polished by hand, with critical areas receiving shot peening and anodising. A toggle switch selects between the balanced and unbalanced inputs, the copper speaker posts sit under a clear plastic cover, and 12 V trigger connections let it switch on with compatible components.
Pairing
The three gain settings let the FLS8 be matched to preamplifiers with high output levels or to sources with their own volume control, reducing the need to run the preamplifier at very low settings. With power still rising into very low impedances, it is suited to large passive loudspeakers whose load drops well beneath the rated figure, and the trigger link simplifies start-up in a system built around an Audia Flight preamplifier.
Alternatives
The Audia Flight Strumento n°8 is the single-channel model in the higher Strumento series, with a 3,000 VA output transformer, bandwidth above 1 MHz and up to 2,000 W of output.
