The AMP I V2 is a stereo power amplifier designed and built by Audionet in Berlin. It uses Audionet's ULA, Ultra-Linear-Amplifier, technology, a complex circuit topology originally developed for medical engineering, and it is built as a dual-mono amplifier in a heavy aluminium case of 28 kg. Bridging raises its output further in mono.
Key specs that matter
Output is 2 x 200 W into 8 ohms, 2 x 300 W into 4 ohms and 2 x 450 W into 2 ohms, and bridged 600 W into 8 ohms and 900 W into 4 ohms. Bandwidth runs from DC to 300 kHz. THD+N is below -100 dB at 1 kHz and 25 W into 2 ohms, signal-to-noise exceeds 106 dB and rise time is 0.63 microseconds. Damping factor exceeds 10,000 at 100 Hz and 4,000 at 500 Hz. Input impedance is 37 kohm. Inputs are two Furutech RCA, and outputs are two pairs of Furutech 4 mm sockets.
Engineering and use context
The amplifier is magnetically and capacitively optimised and built as dual mono, reducing the interaction between channels and between the input, correction and output stages. Circuit size was reduced to improve high-frequency behaviour, and the signal paths are kept short and free of coils, chokes and relays. No capacitor or relay interrupts the DC-coupled path. Input and power stages have separate power supplies. Two toroidal transformers of 700 VA each feed four impulse-stable high-current capacitors totalling 188,000 uF, custom made to Audionet's specification. Driver and output stages are discrete, fast and stable. Parts include Japanese audio-grade electrolytics with silk dielectric, mica capacitors, selected high-voltage foil capacitors and silver-gold alloy internal wiring. A control unit with its own supply monitors DC, high frequency, temperature and overload and disconnects the amplifier from the mains if necessary. Audionet Link, an optical connection, switches the amplifier on remotely with Audionet preamplifiers. The front panel carries a single power button and an operating LED. Maximum power consumption is 1,500 W, falling below 1 W in standby. Audionet also sells the AMP as a lighter mono model.
Pairing
With its very high damping factor and stable 2 ohm output, the AMP I V2 drives low-impedance and difficult speakers. Audionet's PRE G2 and PRE I G3 preamplifiers switch it on through Audionet Link.
Alternatives
Audionet's MAX is the mono reference amplifier of the brand with 400 W into 8 ohms and 1100 W into 2 ohms.
