The Muse Y-40 is a two-channel network streamer and integrated amplifier from Onkyo, launched as part of the Muse Series that the company unveiled at CES 2026 in its 80th anniversary year. The series was designed to replace a rack of separate components with a single box, and the Y-40 went on sale in May 2026 in black and silver finishes with a US price of USD 999 that puts it one step below the Muse Y-50. Both Muse models share a single chassis design, with the Y-40 as the lower-powered and simpler of the pair.

Key specs that matter

The Y-40 is rated at 75 W per channel into 8 ohm under the FTC method and 150 W into 4 ohm at 1 kHz, with speaker impedance support from 4 to 16 ohm. Frequency response is quoted as 20 Hz to 30 kHz within plus 1 and minus 3 dB. Line-level analogue sources get three stereo RCA pairs, an MM phono input and a preamplifier output. Digital inputs cover HDMI ARC, one coaxial and one optical port, and a USB-A socket plays files from storage. The unit also has a 6.3 mm headphone jack. Tone adjustment covers bass and treble, with 10 dB of cut or boost available on each. The chassis measures 350 x 99 x 337 mm and weighs 4.4 kg.

Engineering and use context

Output stages are built around an Axign class D amplifier in a fully digital design and MOSFET output transistors rated for high current, while the rear panel carries upgraded speaker terminals. The case runs without cooling fans, and its heat-dissipation vents around the volume knob follow a traditional Japanese San Kuzushi pattern. A 5.46 inch colour LCD on the aluminium front panel shows track information and an analogue-style VU meter. Network access runs over Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet at 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX, and the unit supports AirPlay 2, Chromecast and the Connect modes of Qobuz, TIDAL and Spotify, with Bluetooth reception using SBC and AAC codecs. Control is available through the Onkyo Controller mobile app. Typical power draw is 65 W, falling below 0.4 W in standby.

Pairing

A TV connected over HDMI ARC sends its soundtrack to the Y-40, letting one set of speakers handle television audio as well as streamed music. A pair of RCA pre-outs allows a separate power amp or powered speakers to be added, and the MM phono input accepts a turntable with no outboard phono preamplifier needed.

Alternatives

The Onkyo Muse Y-50 shares the same chassis size but adds more power, an MM/MC phono stage, HDMI input and output and a subwoofer output at USD 1,499.
