The FL Three S is an Italian dual mono integrated amplifier made by Audia Flight from the compact FL Three S range. It uses the maker's current feedback circuit and can be expanded after purchase with optional boards for vinyl and digital sources.
Key specs that matter
Rated output is 100 W into 8 ohm and 160 W into 4 ohm. Inputs comprise four unbalanced RCA connections and one balanced XLR, plus a monitor input, and one analogue input can be assigned as direct to bypass the preamplifier. Outputs include an unbalanced preamp out, an unbalanced record out, a headphone socket and a single pair of speaker binding posts. The case measures 450 x 110 x 430 mm and weighs 16.5 kg, and maximum power consumption is 400 W. A remote trigger is provided.
Engineering and use context
For its output devices Audia Flight chose MJL1302A and MJL3281A bipolar silicon power transistors that run in Class A up to 0.5 W RMS before moving into Class AB. A large 576 VA toroidal transformer powers the audio circuits. Eight power supplies serve all amplification stages up to the driver transistors, with 13,200 uF of total capacitance for these stabilised rails, and four high-current supplies with 72,000 uF are reserved for the output drivers. An ALPS Blue potentiometer handles the volume setting, chosen by the maker for accurate level control. The headphone amplifier is a separate discrete section. Every input is switched by relays sealed in an inert atmosphere with gold terminations. The logic control section has its own toroidal transformer and is isolated from the audio path by photo-couplers. A large blue OLED display sits on the front. Two optional boards can be fitted at any time - an MM and MC phono stage and a USB DAC that handles 24 bit and 192 kHz.
Pairing
The FL CD Three S player uses the same front dimensions, and its balanced outputs can use the single XLR input. Owners of a turntable can add the phono board rather than an external stage, and the USB board covers a computer source. Through the preamp output, the amplifier can also feed an active subwoofer or a separate power amplifier, and the record output serves a recorder.
Alternatives
The Audia Flight FLS9 is a fully balanced integrated amplifier rated at 150 W per channel, with two XLR and three RCA inputs, two expansion bays and a 25.5 kg chassis.
