The BasX TA2 from Emotiva joins a stereo preamp section, an FM radio, a DAC, a phono preamp and a Class A/B power stage inside a single case. It belongs to the BasX series and was listed by the maker at USD 1,099, with a sale figure of USD 999. Emotiva now offers a revised TA2+ version, while the original TA2 is out of stock.
Key specs that matter
Emotiva rates the amplifier section at 135 W per channel into 8 ohms and 200 W into 4 ohms. Emotiva quotes a line level frequency response of 5 Hz to 50 kHz, THD plus noise below 0.001 percent and noise more than 120 dB down for that path. At the speaker terminals the figures are 20 Hz to 20 kHz within 0.15 dB, distortion below 0.02 percent and noise more than 116 dB down. Analogue connections cover four line level inputs plus one MM/MC phono input with a selector and a home theater bypass set for the front mains and subwoofer. The phono stage offers 44 dB of gain for MM and 55 dB for MC, with loading of 47 kOhms or a choice of 47 and 100 ohms. Digital sources connect through USB, one coaxial S/PDIF socket, two optical ports and Bluetooth 5 with AptX and AAC. Gain of the power stage is 29 dB, minimum load is 4 ohms, and the line output reaches 4 V RMS with crosstalk under 90 dB. The case measures about 432 x 86 x 394 mm and weighs about 11.3 kg, or 14.1 kg boxed.
Engineering and use context
A toroidal transformer supplies the output devices. Analogue inputs keep a pure analogue signal path, while every digital input runs through an Analog Devices AD1955 converter chip working at up to 24 bit and 192 kHz. Bass management uses active Linkwitz-Riley filters with a crossover point that can be set between 40 and 200 Hz, feeding a dedicated subwoofer output. A dimmable blue VFD display shows the status, and control is by a front panel knob with buttons or by the supplied infrared remote. The mains input detects 115 or 230 V at 50 or 60 Hz automatically, and Emotiva grants three years of cover.
Pairing
A turntable, a streamer with coaxial or optical output, a computer over USB and a phone over Bluetooth can all connect at once without extra boxes. The subwoofer output with adjustable crossover lets an active bass unit handle the lowest octaves, and the main outputs receive a 12 dB per octave high-pass. The headphone socket delivers 145 mW into 150 ohms. A 5 to 12 V trigger input and a 12 VDC trigger output link the TA2 with other components.
Alternatives
The Emotiva BasX TA1 is the smaller BasX integrated unit, rated at 60 W RMS per channel.
