The AD-99D is the third generation, which the maker calls the most cost-effective, of a stereo integrated amplifier line from Tonewinner Electronics of Guangzhou, built with durable materials in a redesigned case. The maker says the first generation sold at home and abroad and the second was tailored for overseas markets, and this version keeps the concept while adding digital playback, TV connection and wireless control.
Key specs that matter
Each channel delivers 180 W into 8 ohms at 1 kHz with 1% THD in direct mode, with a rated load range of 4 to 8 ohms. Rated A-weighted noise sits at least 100 dB below signal, THD is 0.01% or lower at 1 kHz, and frequency response extends from 10 Hz to 90 kHz within +1/-3 dB. Channel separation is at least 80 dB, gain exceeds 42 dB and input impedance is 10 kohm. Power consumption is listed as 600 W into 8 ohms, with versions for 110 to 115 V at 60 Hz and 220 to 230 V at 50 Hz.
Engineering and use context
Amplification relies on what Tonewinner calls a patented special Class A circuit, intended to keep Class A behaviour with the efficiency of Class AB, and matched transistors. A 550 VA transformer supplies the amplifier, and eight custom capacitors store 69,400 uF. Supply, input, energy storage and the left and right channels occupy separate chambers. Decoding relies on an AD1955 DAC chip handling PCM up to 192 kHz and 24 bit, specified for about 120 dB SNR at 48 kHz, with its serial input port designed for glueless connection to other devices. Inputs cover a computer USB Audio port running at 16 bit and 48 kHz, three coaxial, one optical and three analog connections, plus USB disk and TF card playback up to 128 GB in APE, FLAC, WAV, MP3 and WMA. Treble and bass can be adjusted independently, and a high-speed low-latency wireless connection works with the brand's own control app. A remote control, user manual and power lead are supplied. The shipping box measures 555 x 555 x 323 mm and weighs 27.1 kg gross.
Pairing
HDMI ARC links the amplifier to a television, and an SW-OUT jack adds a subwoofer for 2.1 use. PRE OUT and AMP IN are bridged by a shorting ring, which can be removed to run the AD-99D as a preamplifier or as a separate power amplifier. A 5 V trigger input and output allow switching in sync with other components.
Alternatives
Tonewinner also builds the AD-86D, a lower-priced stereo integrated with an AD1955 DAC and 120 W per channel.
