Børresen BM3 – an Active Subwoofer with Four 8-inch Drivers

Danish company Audio Group Denmark has introduced the Børresen BM3 (Bass Module 3) subwoofer, designed to work with the brand’s High End loudspeaker systems. The new model is engineered and handcrafted in Denmark; development was led by Michael Børresen and Flemming Erik Rasmussen.

The Børresen BM3 subwoofer is based on a dipole architecture rather than a traditional sealed or bass-reflex enclosure. This approach uses opposing driver polarities to reduce room pressurisation and the unit’s self-generated vibrations – with the goal of making integration with the room and main loudspeakers more predictable. The concept is intended for the Børresen BM3 to function as a bass extension rather than a standalone subwoofer, with an emphasis on phase alignment and controlled low-frequency output.

The Børresen BM3 subwoofer features four 8-inch Børresen DCC8 Neo drivers mounted opposite each other. The drivers use spread-tow carbon-fibre diaphragms with an aramid honeycomb core – a solution that achieves low mass while maintaining high structural rigidity. The drivers are powered by two 300 W amplifiers based on Pascal technology with UMAC switching modulation. According to the manufacturer, this amplification topology is designed to deliver low noise, low output impedance, and precise driver control across the entire operating range.

The Børresen BM3 subwoofer is equipped with a fully analog adjustable low-pass filter with a tuning range from 30 to 80 Hz. The filter is intended to provide seamless integration with a wide range of loudspeaker systems without using digital processing or signal delay. The Børresen BM3 incorporates technologies previously used in the brand’s T and M series loudspeakers. These include the Ansuz Tesla Coil and analog dither technology, both aimed at reducing electrical noise within the system.

The Børresen BM3 enclosure is designed for mechanical stability: the mutually cancelling driver layout is intended to minimise cabinet vibration and resonance during operation. The specified frequency range of the Børresen BM3 extends from 20 to 120 Hz; weight is 46.4 kg. Dimensions: 585 mm high, 399 mm wide, and 429 mm deep. The only finish available is gloss black with carbon inserts. The subwoofer connects via line-level inputs, and gain is adjustable in 0.5 dB steps.

The recommended retail price of the Børresen BM3 subwoofer in Europe is €18,000.
