The Planar 8 is a belt-drive turntable from Rega, built with an ultra-lightweight Tancast 8 foam core plinth and the precision RB880 tonearm. Inspired by Rega's ultimate reference turntable, the Naiad, this UK-built model was engineered from the ground up to capture the essence of that flagship design at a more accessible price point, rather than simply representing an incremental evolution of the previous RP8.

The skeletal plinth combines an aerospace-developed Tancast 8 polyurethane foam core sandwiched between two layers of exceptionally thin, rigid high-pressure laminate, making it 30% lighter than the original RP8 while offering increased rigidity. Double Brace Technology adds a phenolic resin double brace specifically between the tonearm mounting and main hub bearing, forming a structurally sound stressed-beam assembly that resists energy absorption and unwanted resonance. The RB880 tonearm uses an improved aluminium-and-stainless-steel vertical bearing assembly, preloaded and adjusted to less than 1/1000th of a millimetre for friction-free, zero-play movement, terminated with a redesigned low-capacitance phono cable and locking phono plugs. The platter is a three-piece laminated glass design using two different high-quality Pilkington glass types for a super flywheel effect. A 24V synchronous low-noise motor is uniquely mounted from beneath, a technique taken directly from the Naiad, removing stress from the motor body, and each motor is hand-tuned to match its own custom Neo power supply. At 420 x 315 x 125mm with the dustcover fitted, it weighs 4.2kg.
