CD / SACD players and transports — SMSL PL200T

The PL200T is a dedicated CD transport from SMSL, built to read discs and pass the digital signal on to an external DAC rather than convert it itself. It has no DAC and no analogue outputs of its own. Beyond disc playback, it doubles as a USB digital interface, so a computer or streamer can use its clocking and outputs, which lets a single compact box serve both the CD collection and a file-based library.

Key specs that matter

Disc reading is handled by SMSL's self-developed P.A.S.S. (Precision Access Servo System), with native MQA-CD support. The USB-C input is asynchronous, based on an XMOS interface, and accepts PCM up to 32-bit/768kHz and native DSD up to DSD512, with full MQA decoding. Outputs are I2S over HDMI, AES/EBU, coaxial and Toslink optical. The chassis measures 200 x 42 x 175mm, weighs 1.62kg and draws 15W, or 0.5W in standby.

Engineering and use context

The P.A.S.S. servo system was developed in-house for fast, accurate disc reading, and the mechanism is mounted on an anti-vibration system with shock absorbers to keep reading errors low and the drive reliable over time. Internal timing comes from two low-phase-noise, high-precision femtosecond crystal oscillators. For more demanding systems, the external clock input accepts either a 44.1kHz word clock or a 10MHz standard or atomic reference, with selectable 50 or 75 ohm matching and support for both square-wave TTL and sine-wave signals. Power can come from the internal low-noise switching supply, a 5V DC jack or USB-C, so users can experiment with a cleaner external linear supply. The all-aluminium, CNC-machined chassis uses gold-plated connectors, a transparent acrylic disc lid and a laminated tempered-glass IPS display that shows the incoming format and bit depth, with DoP support indicated on screen.

Pairing

The I2S output carries the full 32-bit/768kHz and DSD512 range to DACs with a matching HDMI-type I2S input, which is worth checking since pin assignments vary between brands. AES/EBU, coaxial and optical outputs carry PCM up to 24-bit/192kHz, with MQA at 384kHz converted to 192kHz, and suit almost any external DAC. Visually and dimensionally it pairs naturally with SMSL's compact DACs and amplifiers in the same 200mm-wide format.
