The SGM 10 is a standmount loudspeaker from Tannoy's Super Gold Monitor series, built around a 10-inch Dual Concentric driver based on the legendary Super Gold heritage design first launched in the 1980s. Despite occasionally being catalogued alongside floorstanding models, this is a stand-mounted studio monitor design, and it represents the entry point into a three-model Super Gold Monitor range that also includes the larger 12-inch SGM12 and 15-inch SGM15.

Key specs that matter

Rated response is 40Hz to 30kHz at -6dB. Sensitivity is 89dB into 8 ohms nominal. Crossover frequency is 1200Hz. Recommended amplifier power ranges from 20W to 200W. The Dual Concentric design places the tweeter at the exact centre of the 250mm (10-inch) bass/mid cone, using modern ferrite magnets with copper demodulation rings and a high-flux magnetic circuit that Tannoy states surpasses even the performance of the original 1970s Alnico-magnet design. At 35 x 52.3 x 30.9cm, the cabinet uses 19mm MDF with plywood internal bracing, finished in rigid walnut veneer, sourced in China with final assembly undertaken in Scotland. Five sturdy binding posts on the rear baffle - two positive, two negative, plus a shared ground - support genuine bi-wiring alongside standard single-wire connection.

Sound and use context

Expect class-leading phase coherence and point-source imaging from the coincident driver arrangement, with rich, controlled lows balanced against tight, fast-responding mids and highs - Tannoy's Monitor Gold heritage speakers have served as the final link in countless legendary studio recording chains, and this current Super Gold Monitor incarnation carries that same coaxial design philosophy forward with modern magnet technology.

Pairing

The 89dB sensitivity and 20-200W recommended range suit both tube and solid-state amplifiers comfortably, with the coincident driver design remaining forgiving of amplifier choice across a wide range of listening levels.

Alternatives

Tannoy's SGM12 and SGM15 sit above this model in the same Super Gold Monitor range with larger 12-inch and 15-inch drivers respectively, worth the further investment if this SGM 10's already impressive scale and bass extension still leave ambitions for a larger cabinet and driver. A rigid, well-positioned stand at seated ear height is essential to bring the coincident driver centre close to ear level, and a dealer visit remains the simplest way to compare current pricing across Tannoy Super Gold Monitor range.
