The Serafino G2 is the second generation of the Serafino floorstanding loudspeaker from Sonus Faber, updated with a new woofer voice coil and spider material for greater air movement and deeper bass, plus new midrange drivers with more powerful magnets for faster control of the cone. It sits in the Homage range alongside larger floorstanding models such as Il Cremonese.

Key specs that matter

This is a 3.5-way system. A 28 mm extended range soft dome tweeter with DAD Arrow Point and a high power neodymium magnet sits above a 150 mm midrange driven by a neodymium motor, and two 180 mm woofers handle the low end. The Phase Coherent Level 3 crossover divides the signal at 200, 250 and 2,400 Hz. Frequency response is quoted as 30 Hz to 35,000 Hz, with a sensitivity of 90 dB SPL at 2.83 V and 1 m and a nominal impedance of 4 ohm. The recommended amplifier range is 50 W to 300 W. Each speaker measures 1,091 x 396 x 485 mm and weighs 52 kg. Counting both woofers, every cabinet carries four drivers, and the two woofers share the vented lower section.

Engineering and use context

A closed chamber fitted with Intono houses the midrange, and Intono is an internal structure that reduces the acoustic pressure generated inside a chosen frequency band so that the midrange cone is not disturbed by back pressure. The woofers load into a vented box using the Stealth Ultraflex system. A phase plug with a damping ring reduces air turbulence at the centre of the driver, and the whole cabinet is mass loaded to correct resonances. The crossover is built with hand-soldered capacitors, Jantzen inductors and custom components. Its lute-shaped body combines glossy lacquered timber, black leather trim and aluminium parts, and the colour choices include Red and Graphite.

Pairing

With its nominal rating and sensitivity, the Serafino G2 is not hard to drive for its size, but a partner that holds steady into a low impedance is still the safer choice. Four binding posts labelled Mid-Hi and Low allow the woofers and the upper section to be fed separately through bi-wiring or bi-amplification, and a stereo amplifier in the stated range suits a room of 20 m2 or more.

Alternatives

Il Cremonese is the larger Sonus Faber floorstander with two 220 mm infra-woofers added and an 84 kg cabinet.
