The M5 is the only three-way model of the three in the Audes M series, standing above the two-way M2 tower and the compact M1. Audes, an Estonian company in Johvi that also produces valve amplifiers, transformers and its own speaker drivers, developed the series over several years with attention to every cabinet part. The cabinet takes a simple square section, which the maker regards as a timeless shape that fits into different interiors. In the current Audes catalogue the M series sits beside the Reference, Excellence AMT, Credo, Maestro, Credenza, Universal and Custom loudspeaker lines, and the company dates its origins to a radio factory registered in Tallinn in 1935.

Key specs that matter

A 10 inch paper cone woofer of Audes design and manufacture covers the bottom end up to 300 Hz, two 5.25 inch paper cone units take the range from there to 1,800 Hz, and a 1 inch fabric dome tweeter handles the top. Frequency range is 40 Hz to 30,000 Hz at plus or minus 2 dB. Sensitivity is 88 dB for 2.83 V at 1 m, nominal impedance 4 ohm, and the power limits are 60 W long-term and 130 W short-term. With spikes and terminals counted, the M5 is 1,259 mm tall, 345 mm wide and 383 mm deep, and it weighs 46 kg.

Engineering and use context

Inside the square enclosure, extra walls set at an angle break up parallel surfaces that would otherwise support standing waves. The body is not wood but a mineral solid surface compound, mainly aluminium trihydrate, picked for its density and tensile strength, which keep panel movement low. An MDF stand carries this body and itself sits on a plinth made of the mineral compound. Bass loading is reflex, with a downward-firing vent below the front panel that is split into several channels for controlled airflow, and Audes credits this layout with steadier behaviour across different rooms and a more compact cabinet. The crossover network has a compartment of its own, and the internal wiring uses single crystal copper. The woofer was tuned by Audes specifically for the M line, while the choice of a silk dome tweeter let the designers set the upper crossover point relatively low.

Pairing

Its nominal impedance favours a solid-state or valve amplifier that is specified for 4 ohm operation. Amplifier output and listening level should be matched to the long-term rating listed above, not to the physical size of the cabinet.

Alternatives

The Audes M2 offers the two-way route within the M line, with a single 6.5 inch woofer, an 8 ohm rating and 81 dB sensitivity.
