The Legacy 3220 is the more affordable of the two towers in the Elipson Legacy series, positioned above the Legacy 3210 bookshelf speaker and below the Legacy 3230. Elipson, founded in 1938, builds the series at its own plant in Burgundy, France, where the brand also makes turntables, and the 3220 is listed at EUR 4,989 per pair, against EUR 2,989 for the 3210 and EUR 8,489 for the 3230. The Legacy line was introduced in late 2019, with the 3210 arriving first.

Key specs that matter

Two 6.5 inch mid-woofers use aluminium cones with a ceramic surface layer, and the treble goes to an AMT ribbon tweeter with wide dispersion. The crossover points are 600 Hz and 2,800 Hz. The tweeter high-pass is 18 dB per octave with impedance equalization, the upper mid-woofer rolls off at 12 dB per octave with notch circuitry, and the lower one at 6 dB per octave. Frequency response is 35 Hz to 30,000 Hz within 3 dB, with 38 kHz reached at minus 5 dB. Sensitivity is 89 dB at 1 W and 1 m, and nominal impedance is 6 ohm with a minimum of 4.4 ohm at 168 Hz. Power handling is 150 W RMS. Each speaker is 276 mm wide, 1,105 mm high and 360 mm deep and weighs 32.8 kg.

Engineering and use context

In the 2.5-way arrangement both mid-woofers share the bass, and the top driver alone carries the midrange until the AMT takes over, which is why the two low-pass filters differ in slope and frequency. The cabinet is built from 25 mm MDF with two braces that tie the mid-woofers to the frame, while the curved side walls vary in thickness. The reflex port has a flared mouth and vents downward, so the output leaves at the base rather than at the front or rear. Buyers choose walnut or silver oak for the cabinet, both combined with black satin details, and the two finishes carry separate product codes, ELILEG3220WNQB and ELILEG3220SO. All three Legacy models share the ceramic-surfaced aluminium mid-woofer, chosen for lightness and rigidity, and the AMT tweeter.

Pairing

Twin terminal blocks of audiophile quality accept bi-wiring or bi-amplification with a pair of stereo amplifiers. The minimum impedance is an easy match for most transistor integrated amplifiers, and the power rating marks the upper boundary for amplifier power.

Alternatives

The Elipson Legacy 3230 is the bigger three-way tower in the range, with two 8 inch woofers in its column and a 6 inch ceramic midrange in a resin sphere.
