The BBSM-12 is a passive three-way main monitor from Westlake Audio of Thousand Oaks, California, and sits in the company's BBSM family next to the BBSM-4, the BBSM-10 and the BBSM-15F. Westlake builds it for recording studios, mastering engineers and artists who need accurate reproduction with weight placed on the low end. An optional PE muff can be fitted around the cabinet.

Key specs that matter

Two 12-inch woofers, a 6.5-inch midrange cone and a 1.25-inch tweeter make up the driver complement, split at 500 Hz and 4 kHz. Frequency response is quoted as 45 Hz to 20 kHz within plus or minus 3 dB. Sensitivity is 96 dB measured at 1 m with a 2.83 V input. The impedance is 4 ohm nominal and falls to a 2 ohm minimum. Power handling follows the IEC method, with 145 W short-term and 365 W long-term ratings. The enclosure measures 48.3 cm high, 86.4 cm wide and 58.4 cm deep and weighs close to 100 kg per speaker. Finish options are black or walnut, and the warranty runs for one year.

Engineering and use context

Westlake fits a high-level passive network inside the box and states that it sends every frequency band only to its assigned driver so that no band leaks into a neighbouring unit. With a width well beyond its height, the drivers sit in a horizontal arrangement suited to building the monitors into a front wall rather than standing them in open space. The voltage reference corresponds to 2 W at the nominal impedance, which is the basis for the sensitivity number. Connection is made through a heavy-duty barrier strip, which accepts thick bare wire or spade lugs, and in its BBSM guidance Westlake advises running its own speaker cable in the largest practical gauge to cut resistance between amplifier and crossover.

Pairing

The low minimum impedance puts real demands on the amplifier. Westlake explains that its low-impedance crossover networks need an amplifier able to drive such loads without current limiting, and it recommends passive bi-amping for its speakers. The company also notes that its designs can absorb brief peaks of two to three times their continuous rating, but it asks owners to keep the amplifier out of clipping.

Alternatives

The Westlake BBSM-15F steps up within the BBSM range to a bigger three-way enclosure with two 15-inch woofers and a 10-inch midrange.
