The A.01 is a passive floorstanding loudspeaker from Bärbox, a small German company founded by the mechanical engineer Christian Fischer. The brand works in short production runs with a large share of hand work, and it keeps its range deliberately narrow - the A series with the A.01 tower and the compact A.02, plus the larger B series with the B.01 and B.02. Each A.01 is handcrafted in Germany, and the pair price is EUR 5,490 including VAT.
Key specs that matter
Bärbox rates the A.01 at 38 Hz to 20 kHz, with a nominal impedance of 8 ohm and a sensitivity of 86 dB measured at 2.83 V and 1 m. Because 2.83 V into 8 ohm equals 1 W, that figure can be compared directly with speakers specified per watt. The cabinet stands 100 cm tall, 22 cm wide and 24 cm deep, and each speaker weighs 17 kg. Two wood finishes are listed - oak paired with a light beige surface and walnut paired with a grey tone the maker calls volcano - and custom pairings of wood and colour are possible on request.
Engineering and use context
This is a two-way design. The upper part of the cabinet carries a tweeter horn cut from solid wood, which is both the visual centrepiece and the acoustic core of the model. According to Bärbox, the horn geometry was calculated to steer dispersion into a controlled pattern, to raise efficiency and to lower distortion compared with a bare dome. Below it a single midwoofer works in an enclosure planned to keep resonances low, with internal bracing and targeted damping for the same purpose. The cabinet itself is solid wood chosen piece by piece, and the natural grain is left visible, so two pairs never look identical. The slim front and shallow depth keep the footprint close to that of a stand-mounted box, while the cabinet height places the horn near ear level for a seated listener. Solid terminals take the speaker cable at the rear.
Pairing
This benign load combined with middling efficiency suggests an ordinary solid-state or push-pull valve amplifier rather than a very low-powered single-ended design, since the horn is used here only for the treble and the midwoofer sets the overall efficiency. The benign impedance means current delivery is less of a concern than with 4 ohm towers. The wood finishes are meant to sit in a living room, so compact electronics suit the concept.
Alternatives
The Bärbox B.01 is the brand's other floorstander, a 100 x 24 x 24 cm model weighing 17.5 kg with a natural fibre midwoofer cone, 87 dB sensitivity and a pair price of EUR 5,990.
