Floorstanding loudspeakers — Spendor А7.2

The A7.2 is one of the four models in the second-generation A-Line from Spendor Audio Systems, a UK loudspeaker company that engineers and assembles its products close to Sheffield. It follows the original A7 and had its world premiere on 21 February 2025, the opening day of that year's Bristol show, together with the A1.2, A2.2 and A4.2. Deliveries began in April 2025 at a UK price of GBP 3,995 per pair, and in the US the pair lists at USD 6,498. Spendor describes the cabinet as a slim linear form sized so it can go into most homes without dominating the room.

Key specs that matter

The A7.2 pairs a new 27 mm polyamide dome tweeter, rear-chambered and with a wide soft surround, with an 18 cm mid and bass driver carrying an EP77 polymer cone made by Spendor. Their crossover point is 2 kHz. In a typical room the response reaches from 33 Hz up to 27 kHz. Sensitivity is 85 dB for 1 watt at 1 metre, and nominal impedance is 6.75 ohms, dipping to 5.4 ohms at minimum. Unclipped programme power handling is 150 watts. Each cabinet measures 934 mm in height, 180 mm in width and 305 mm in depth and weighs 17.7 kg. Veneers come in oak, walnut or black oak, and a satin white paint option completes the four choices, with a plinth in satin black under each one.

Engineering and use context

Spendor restructured the internal bracing of the asymmetric enclosure for this generation and bonded a constrained layer of Sorbothane into it, aiming to reduce cabinet resonance and allow freer airflow inside. The rear-facing reflex port was redesigned with a shorter air path, which the company says lowers port resonance and interference. A lower crossover frequency widens the band the tweeter covers, and the crossover network itself was simplified for better phase behaviour between the two drivers. The woofer gained a redesigned spider for tighter cone control. Cable connection is through one recessed pair of precision terminals, and the accessories are adjustable spike feet and a grille held on by magnets.

Pairing

The recommended amplifier range is 25 to 200 watts per channel, and Spendor calls the A7.2 easy to drive. The shallow impedance minimum is comfortable for most transistor integrated amplifiers and for many valve designs, and the single terminal pair means one cable per speaker rather than bi-wiring or bi-amping.

Alternatives

The Spendor A4.2 is the slimmer floorstander below it in the A-Line, standing 861 mm tall and weighing 14.5 kg.
