The STUDIO 5X is the first studio monitor from Berlin-based Teufel, a compact active 3-way speaker sold in pairs without stands. A second version, the STUDIO 5X BT, adds a wireless receiver, while both share the same cabinet, drivers and electronics. The monitor was developed in Berlin with the help of a Klippel Near-Field Scanner, a measurement system that captures the full radiation pattern of a speaker without an anechoic chamber.

Key specs that matter

A 5.25-inch long-throw woofer works with a concentric coaxial unit in which a 20 mm fabric tweeter sits on the same axis as a 75 mm midrange driver, forming a point source. Three Class D amplifier channels deliver 122 W RMS per speaker, and maximum level is 106 dB at 1 m. Teufel quotes 40 Hz to 24 kHz at -6 dB and 37 Hz at -10 dB, without a subwoofer. Each cabinet measures 21.3 x 32.8 x 26 cm and weighs 8 kg.

Engineering and use context

The DSP uses FIR-based linear-phase filters to achieve a near-ideal step response. A waveguide around the coaxial unit controls dispersion, the cabinet edges are rounded to reduce diffraction, and the flow-optimized reflex channel exits on the front baffle. It can stand vertically or lie horizontally, with midrange and tweeter staying on one axis either way. The rear panel carries low-shelf and high-shelf filters plus presets for different placements such as free-standing or near a wall. The status LED is dimmable and can be turned off entirely, and standby times are adjustable to suit the workplace. Two M6 threaded inserts on the back accept common stands, wall brackets and ceiling mounts, and Teufel developed matching desk feet together with the stand maker K&M (Konig & Meyer), sold as an option. The pair launched at EUR 499.99, the BT version at EUR 549.99.

Pairing

Signal enters via a balanced combo socket that takes XLR or 6.3 mm jack plugs, or via an unbalanced RCA input, which lets it take a line signal straight from a recording interface, a desk or a line-level preamp with volume control. Neither version needs an external power amplifier, and each speaker is fed and powered separately. The STUDIO 5X BT adds Bluetooth 5.0 with aptX HD and AAC for streaming from a phone or computer without a cable, keeping the wired XLR, jack and RCA inputs as well.

Alternatives

Within Teufel, the Ultima 20 Mk3 is a passive bookshelf alternative for owners who already have a stereo amplifier.
