The Signature i91 MKIII is the third generation of the i91 standmount monitor from VAF Research, the loudspeaker company Philip Vafiadis founded in Adelaide in 1978 and which has since sold more than 10,000 pairs of speakers internationally. VAF says it came out of an electro-acoustic research programme that it ranks among the most intensive carried out in Australia for consumer loudspeakers. The i91 dual concentric driver is also used in the smaller Signature i90, and the i49 borrows its dome tweeter. The Australian price starts at AUD 4,799, and a US pair cost USD 3,998 in 2024.

Key specs that matter

The i91 MKIII works as a passive 2-way speaker, vented through a port on the front baffle. VAF gives a frequency range of 45 Hz to 18 kHz and a response of 50 Hz to 18 kHz. Nominal impedance is 8 ohms and sensitivity is 86 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m. The maker suggests amplifiers of up to 150 W. Each cabinet is 220 mm wide, 440 mm high and 360 mm deep, and each unit weighs 15 kg net.

Engineering and use context

VAF makes the enclosure from first-grade MDF up to 36 mm thick, joined with mitred edges and braced internally. A lining of the company's own HyperSoft damping material absorbs reflections inside the box. The design brief lists time alignment of the drive units, shaped power response in both the vertical and horizontal planes, stored energy damping and optimum Q crossover filters. With the high frequency dome placed in the middle of the coaxial cone, both bands start from a common origin. Every pair is handbuilt in VAF's own Adelaide workshop once ordered, with a build time of roughly 12 weeks. Six wood and lacquer finishes are listed - American Cherry, Australian Jarrah, Black Oak, Piano Black, Piano Palisander and Tasmanian Blackwood. VAF backs the speaker with a 10-year guarantee and a 30-day home trial, and ships worldwide.

Pairing

Its sensitivity is two decibels below that of the SE model, so the best partner is a transistor amplifier able to sustain its full output into the load for long periods, rather than a low-output design driven near clipping. The cabinet height and front vent mean the speaker is intended for a dedicated stand instead of a shelf, and the coaxial driver keeps the output of both bands arriving from one position at the listening seat.

Alternatives

The VAF Signature i91 MKIII SE is the upgraded version of this monitor, with a SEAS-developed magnesium alloy coaxial driver and bass rated to 40 Hz.
