The Prime Bookshelf is the two-way stand-mounted design in the Prime loudspeaker series from the American manufacturer SVS. It was listed at USD 600 per pair and ships in two finishes, a Piano Gloss Black lacquer and a Premium Black Ash. Its cabinet is a ported MDF box, with a wood-grain vinyl covering on the Black Ash version.

Key specs that matter

A 1 inch aluminium dome tweeter, roughly 25 mm, works with a 6.5 inch woofer of about 165 mm, and the handover point sits at 2.3 kHz. The rated response is 48 Hz to 25 kHz within plus or minus 3 dB. Nominal impedance is 8 ohm and sensitivity is 87 dB. The speaker is designed for amplifiers delivering 20 to 150 W. The cabinet measures 338 mm high, 203 mm wide and 262 mm deep, and each speaker weighs 7.03 kg.

Engineering and use context

In front of the tweeter dome sits a diffuser whose shape SVS optimised through FEA modelling. The woofer has a polypropylene cone, picked because SVS wanted high stiffness for low moving mass and pistonic behaviour, and a polypropylene surround, driven by a long-stroke motor and suspension. Its basket is cast from an ABS and fibreglass composite, which SVS says keeps the parts precisely aligned and helps carry heat away. SVS made the front baffle extra thick and added bracing inside, and low frequencies are reinforced through a 43 mm port on the rear panel. The two-way crossover, which SVS calls SoundMatch, is built with high-grade capacitors, air-core inductors and a heavy-trace printed circuit board. Connections are made through a single pair of 5-way binding posts, and SVS lists neither bi-wiring nor bi-amping as supported. Grilles come fitted and can be removed. SVS backs its loudspeakers with a 5 year unconditional warranty and a 45 day in-home trial.

Pairing

The Prime line is sold both as individual stereo pairs and as part of a packaged Prime Bookshelf surround system, which SVS offers for home cinema use. With its easy nominal load and moderate sensitivity, it can be driven by the stereo integrated amplifiers and AV receivers that fall within the rated power band.

Alternatives

Within the same brand, the Ultra Evolution Bookshelf is the stand-mounted loudspeaker from the higher Ultra Evolution series.
