The METHOD Bookshelf is a compact two-way coaxial loudspeaker by Zu Audio, a company that hand builds its speakers and cables in the USA. It was introduced at Capital Audiofest in November 2024 together with a matching Method Sub, with shipping planned for the end of that year. The launch price was USD 699 per speaker, so a stereo pair costs about USD 1,400.

Key specs that matter

A single 8 inch (204 mm) coaxial driver covers the whole band, with a tweeter mounted at its centre. Zu rates efficiency at 93 dB at 1 m with 2.8 V, which corresponds to one watt into the nominal 8 ohm load. Bandwidth is quoted as 70 Hz to 20 kHz within 3 dB under half-space conditions, while typical in-room response reaches down to about 55 Hz. Because both drivers share one axis, the radiation beam width is given as plus or minus 45 degrees both horizontally and vertically. Each cabinet is 38.1 cm tall, 22.2 cm wide and 27.9 cm deep and weighs about 9 kg.

Engineering and use context

The METHOD departs from the widebander approach that Zu uses in many of its towers and relies on a coaxial unit instead. Each coaxially mounted tweeter is batched to match its partner, and it is filtered by a triple-pole electrical high-pass combined with an acoustic diffuser and filter in front of the dome. The enclosure is described as a wide-mouth short-pipe design with a front-facing port, which was shaped to suit this particular driver. With no port at the back, the box can sit inside a standard bookshelf, and it can be used upright or laid flat on its side. The standard finishes are Satin Black or Satin White, other finishes cost extra, and buyers can pick stainless steel or black anodized screws for the driver ring. Zu also states that the speaker needs only about a week of use to settle into its designed behaviour, which is shorter than the company usually quotes.

Pairing

With this efficiency the METHOD suits moderate-power valve or transistor amplifiers, and the benign nominal load avoids stressing small output stages. In a room of around 20 m2 the pair can work alone on stands or furniture, and the Method Sub, built around a lightweight paper-cone 15 inch driver, was developed to add the lowest octaves where the bookshelf rolls off.

Alternatives

Within Zu Audio's range the DWX is another compact stand-mount model that the company presents as an all-purpose loudspeaker.
