The Lockwood Mini is a compact monitor from Lockwood Loudspeakers, a British company whose history goes back to the 1930s, when the carpenter Stanley Timms began building speakers after the first UK television broadcast in 1936. A partnership with the BBC later produced the Lockwood studio monitors. The Mini was originally developed for monitoring in smaller rooms, and Lockwood lists among its users the BBC, ITV and Neve Electronics. It is priced at GBP 9,999 per pair and was exhibited in Bristol in 2023.

Key specs that matter

A single 10 inch, or 295 mm, Lockwood Green HPD/SL dual-concentric driver covers the whole range, and Lockwood describes the design as a two-way. The crossover comes from the Lockwood A Series. Frequency response is 40 Hz to 20 kHz, sensitivity is 92 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m, and nominal impedance is 8 ohm. The power rating is 50 W. The cabinet is a sealed infinite baffle built from 18 mm birch plywood, finished only in walnut veneer. Each speaker measures 398 mm wide, 348 mm deep and 560 mm high and weighs about 18.5 kg.

Engineering and use context

With a dual-concentric layout, the high-frequency section sits on the same axis as the bass cone, so both parts of the range radiate from one point, which is what Lockwood's point-source description refers to. The relationship between the two sections therefore stays the same at different listening angles and distances, which matters for a monitor used at short distances on a mixing desk or meter bridge. An infinite baffle cabinet has no port, so the enclosed air acts as a spring behind the cone and the bass rolls off gradually below its lower limit rather than falling steeply below a port tuning frequency. A sealed box also avoids port noise at high levels. Birch plywood is stiff and dimensionally stable, which limits panel movement, and the walnut veneer is applied over it by hand, as every pair is hand-built. The Mini is compact only in relation to large studio monitors, and its driver is larger than the woofers used in most stand-mount speakers, which is why the cabinet is almost as deep as it is wide.

Pairing

High sensitivity lets low-powered amplifiers, including valve designs, reach normal listening levels in a room of about 20 m2, and the nominal impedance asks little current of the amplifier. The height and weight of the cabinet call for sturdy low stands rather than a shelf.

Alternatives

The Lockwood Mini Major is a smaller stand-mount model with a 5 inch HPD/SL driver, made as a limited edition of 984 numbered pairs.
