The L1 is a compact two-way speaker by Axxess, a brand of Audio Group Denmark alongside Ansuz, Aavik and Børresen, set up to offer the group's technology at lower prices. It was designed by the Børresen engineering team led by Michael Børresen with Flemming Erik Rasmussen. The price starts at GBP 2,500 per pair, with the matching stand adding GBP 1,000, and the US price is USD 4,000 per pair. The warranty from Audio Group Denmark covers five years.

Key specs that matter

The tweeter is the Axxess KR ribbon with a Kapton membrane, which Axxess states is 25 times lighter than a dome tweeter and has about twice its area. The bass and midrange driver is the Axxess DCC5. Frequency response is 50 Hz to 22 kHz, sensitivity is 86 dB at 1 W and impedance is above 6 ohm. The minimum recommended amplifier power is 50 W. The speaker measures 43 x 21.5 x 32 cm and weighs 10.3 kg, and with the stand the figures are 71 x 29.5 x 39 cm and 10.8 kg. Finishes are black or white satin paint.

Engineering and use context

The DCC5 membrane is a laminate of three skins, two layers of spread carbon fibre around an aramid honeycomb core, which gives high stiffness with little mass. Its motor uses double copper caps on the pole rings, a design taken from the Børresen X series, to raise the magnetic flux and lower the voice coil inductance, so the impedance of the driver rises less with frequency. A ribbon tweeter's membrane is driven across its whole surface rather than at the edge as with a dome, and its low mass lets it follow fast changes in the signal. The larger radiating area means the ribbon needs less excursion for the same output than a small dome. The cabinet and baffle are made from a composite of natural materials, and the stand uses the same material, with styling cues from Ansuz, Aavik and Børresen products. Drawing on the Børresen X series lets Axxess use driver technology developed for more expensive speakers at a lower price.

Pairing

The Axxess Forté 1, Forté 2 and Forté 3 streaming integrated amplifiers, each with a built-in streamer, DAC and headphone amplifier, are the intended partners. The moderate sensitivity means amplifiers comfortably above the minimum rating suit a room of about 20 m2, and the matching stand sets the drivers at the height the speaker was designed for.

Alternatives

Axxess has no other stand-mount loudspeaker, as the L3 launched alongside the L1 is a floorstanding model.
