The Z1 Cryo Edition is the treated version of the compact Z-series monitor from Børresen Acoustics, a Danish brand within Audio Group Denmark. Cabinet, drivers and quoted figures match the standard Z1, and the difference lies in a deep-freeze process applied to its metal parts. Its US price was USD 14,500 per pair, USD 2,500 more than the untreated model, while the dedicated Monitor Z stands cost USD 2,860 per pair.

Key specs that matter

Every metal component except the tweeter membrane is held at about -196°C for 72 hours in Børresen's own facility. According to the maker this raises conductivity by 6-8% and lowers inductance. The layout is a passive two-way, with a planar ribbon tweeter above a 4.5-inch bass and midrange driver, and Børresen quotes 50 Hz to 50 kHz, 86 dB and 6 ohm. Each box is 37.0 x 18.5 x 33.8 cm and weighs 11.6 kg.

Engineering and use context

The closed ribbon has a moving mass of 0.01 g and an efficiency of 94 dB, uses no transformer and plays from roughly 2.5 kHz upward. Below it, the woofer cone is a composite of two very thin carbon skins on both faces of a 4 mm Nomex honeycomb, with a total mass of 5.5 g and an 8 mm voice coil. Its iron-free magnet assembly cuts inductance to about one tenth of a conventional driver. The crossover is a parallel design with components taken from the 0-series, built to be mechanically stable to reduce resonance within the network. The enclosure is made of a composite material developed within Audio Group Denmark and is tuned by a reflex port. The Monitor Z stand uses adjustable cross plate feet for Darkz resonance control, and both black and white satin versions are offered. The network is a simple second-order filter.

Pairing

Its sensitivity and load mean that a mid-power amplifier is a reasonable starting point, and Aavik amplifiers and Ansuz cables, made by sister companies, are the partners the group itself proposes. The choice between the two comes down to budget, since dimensions and connections are shared.

Alternatives

The Børresen M1 sits far above it as a two-way stand-mount with silver pole rings and a zirconium-coated woofer.
