The AR 8 is a Dolby Atmos enabled multifunction speaker from Canton of Weilrod, Germany, designed to match the curved cabinets of the Vento series and sold as a pair at EUR 579 on the Canton site. It can sit on top of floorstanding or compact speakers as a height channel or hang on a wall as a stereo or effects speaker, and Canton now lists the Vento AR 1 as its successor.

Key specs that matter

Inside a sealed box, Canton pairs one 154 mm bass-midrange driver and one 25 mm dome tweeter, crossed over at 3,200 Hz. Canton specifies a transmission range of 50 Hz to 30,000 Hz, an impedance of 4 to 8 ohm and an efficiency of 86 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m. Load capacity is 60 W nominal and 100 W music. Each speaker measures 19.5 x 27 x 14.5 cm when lying horizontally and weighs 3.6 kg. The design carries a Dolby Atmos licence. Canton gives a warranty period of 5 years, and the AR 4 is also part of the same Atmos family.

Engineering and use context

The bass-midrange cone is made of titanium graphite and clamped in a triple-folded wave surround, while the tweeter dome is aluminium oxide ceramic. Crossover components are tightly toleranced, and the cabinet is built from multi-layer laminate to resist resonance. Its gently curved side walls and rounded edges repeat the outline of the Vento models so that it can sit on them as an add-on module. An integrated wall bracket allows quick wall mounting, and device feet are supplied for free placement. The box holds the pair, the feet, the covers and the operating instructions, and Canton lists its CantoLink 400 cable as an optional accessory. Connections are 24-carat gold-plated screw terminals that take cable cross-sections of up to 10 mm2. A flat black fabric cover attaches magnetically, and finishes include black high gloss, white high gloss and walnut, with a dark walnut high gloss version also catalogued.

Pairing

Used for height channels, the AR 8 speakers call for a surround amplifier that decodes Dolby Atmos and has free outputs for the top positions. Canton builds a matched system around them with the Vento 90 floorstanders, the Vento 50 centre, Vento 30 surrounds and the Vento Sub 12 subwoofer. Used on a wall as stereo or effect speakers, the moderate power handling and the impedance that falls to 4 ohm suit amplifier channels that are stable into 4 ohm loads.

Alternatives

The Canton AR 5 is a smaller Dolby Atmos multifunction speaker from the same range, listed at EUR 449.
