Headphones — Moondrop S8

The S8 is Moondrop's eight-driver universal IEM and the successor to the company's earlier A8 flagship. It is built entirely from balanced armature drivers split across three frequency bands, and each pair is hand-assembled and polished, with the clear resin shells showing the drivers, sound tubes and crossover inside. It has since been discontinued, with the A8 line continuing Moondrop's multi-armature approach.

Key specs that matter

Each earpiece holds eight balanced armature drivers - two Sonion 37-series units for the bass, four midrange units based on the Softears D-MID-B and two Knowles SWFK tweeters. Impedance is 16 ohms +/-15% at 1kHz, sensitivity is 122dB/Vrms, and frequency response is 20Hz to 40kHz, or 20Hz to 20kHz as effective response. Channel matching is held within +/-1dB. The shells are UV-moulded medical-grade resin, the socket is a flush 0.78mm two-pin type, and the cable is terminated with a 3.5mm plug.

Engineering and use context

The three groups of drivers are managed by a triple crossover built from three separately designed sound tubes and a crossover PCB, so each driver type only covers the band it is best suited to. For the low end, Moondrop chose a vented Sonion bass receiver in a version with added back volume, which lets the diaphragm move more freely than a sealed armature while keeping distortion lower than a standard vented unit. The midrange uses a driver customised by Moondrop so that its frequency and amplitude response match the company's VDSF target with very low distortion, and its circuitry was designed for easier drive. The Knowles SWFK tweeters were selected for low distortion and a high cutoff frequency. A recurring problem in multi-driver earphones is phase mismatch between drivers at the crossover points, and Moondrop engineered the S8's crossover for high phase consistency across the full band. Internal wiring uses 6N OCC Litz conductors. Every set goes through four acoustic tests before shipping to keep production consistent.

Pairing

At 16 ohms and 122dB/Vrms, the S8 is very easy to drive and reaches full levels from phones and dongle DACs. Its low impedance and high sensitivity make it best matched with sources that have a low output impedance and a low noise floor, since multi-armature crossovers react to source impedance. The standard two-pin socket accepts upgrade cables, balanced cables and Bluetooth modules.
