Headphones — Erzetich Audio Mania

The Mania is the dynamic-driver flagship of Erzetich Audio, the Slovenian boutique brand founded in 2012 by Blaž Erzetič, whose background spans both electronics and fine arts. Launched alongside the planar-magnetic Phobos, it is a full-size, semi-open desktop headphone whose hand-crafted octagonal cups make it one of the most visually distinctive designs in its price class. It is hand-built in Slovenia and intended primarily for home listening.

Key specs that matter

At its heart is a 50mm titanium-coated dynamic driver, about 10mm larger than the drivers used in many mainstream open-back reference headphones. Impedance is 80 ohms. The cups are semi-open and octagonal, and weight is around 450g. The earpads use a leatherette finish, and the headphone contains no animal-derived materials.

Engineering and use context

The titanium coating stiffens the large diaphragm, helping it move as a rigid piston across a wider part of its range, while the 50mm diameter gives it a large radiating area for low-frequency output at moderate excursion. The semi-open cups are built from hand-finished Linden wood, and later revisions of the design moved to a combination of Linden wood with CNC-machined aluminium and a carbon-fibre headband, trimming weight and improving long-term durability and finish. A twin-pivot aluminium gimbal gives the cups a wide range of swivel, and adjustment screws let them slide up and down to suit larger heads - usually a one-time setting for a single owner. The cups are fully symmetrical, so left and right are defined by how the detachable cable is attached, which makes the orientation irrelevant when picking the headphone up. Standard connectors make aftermarket and balanced cables easy to source. Each hand-assembled pair ships with a certificate of authenticity and a velvet storage bag.

Pairing

The 80-ohm load sits well with desktop headphone amplifiers, both solid-state and tube designs with moderate output impedance. It is also easy enough to drive that capable high-output portable players power it without strain, and the higher impedance keeps it largely immune to background hiss from noisier sources. For balanced amplifiers, the detachable cable can be swapped for a balanced termination.
