Headphones — Moondrop LAN

The LAN is a wired in-ear monitor from Moondrop built around one dynamic driver, named after the orchid flower (兰 in Chinese) rather than anything to do with networking. It sits in the brand's entry-level range, launched at around 40 dollars, but brings in a metal-injection-moulded steel shell, a detachable cable and a beryllium-plated driver that Moondrop normally reserves for pricier models.

Key specs that matter

Each earpiece houses a 10mm dual-cavity dynamic driver with a beryllium-plated dome composite diaphragm, driven by a 0.03mm copper-clad aluminium voice coil in an N52 magnet system. Frequency response is 15Hz to 37kHz, or 20Hz to 20kHz within 3dB under IEC 60318-4. Impedance is 32 ohms +/-15% at 1kHz, sensitivity is 120dB/Vrms, and THD is rated at 0.5% or below at 1kHz and 94dB. The cable uses 0.78mm two-pin connectors and a 3.5mm single-ended plug.

Engineering and use context

The dual-cavity driver structure divides the internal air volume into two chambers, giving Moondrop finer control over the acoustic loading of the diaphragm across the frequency range. Plating the dome with beryllium stiffens its centre while the composite outer section keeps enough internal damping, a combination aimed at pushing break-up modes above the audible band. The shell is made by metal injection moulding (MIM) in stainless steel, which allows small, precise and dense housings that resist resonance and wear, and the compact shape with rounded corners is designed to seal in the ear canal without pressing on the outer ear. An internal brass acoustic chamber completes the enclosure. Moondrop fits its patented filter that combines the acoustic damper and debris barrier in one part, protecting the nozzle from earwax so that channel balance stays consistent in daily use. The tuning follows Moondrop's VDSF target curve through the combination of cavity design and damping rather than any electronic processing. Three pairs of silicone ear tips in S, M and L and a soft carrying pouch are supplied.

Pairing

At 32 ohms and 120dB/Vrms, the LAN is easy to drive from a phone, laptop or an inexpensive USB-C dongle DAC, and does not need a dedicated headphone amplifier. Because the cable is detachable with a standard two-pin interface, it can be replaced with a balanced 4.4mm cable or a Bluetooth two-pin module.
