The JIU is an entry-level in-ear monitor from Moondrop and the direct successor to the brand's widely popular CHU. Its defining difference is the connection - instead of a 3.5mm plug, the fixed cable ends in a USB-C connector containing its own audio chip, DAC and DSP, so the earphone is built as a complete digital-to-analogue playback chain rather than a passive transducer. It suits the growing number of phones, tablets and laptops that no longer have a headphone jack.

Key specs that matter

Each earpiece uses a 10mm dynamic driver with a titanium-plated diaphragm, a 0.035mm ultra-thin CCAW voice coil and an N52 internal magnetic circuit. Sensitivity is 110dB/Vrms at 1kHz, and THD is rated at 1% or below at 1kHz. Frequency response is quoted as 10Hz to 35kHz in free-field measurement and 20Hz to 20kHz under IEC 60318-4. The housing is zinc alloy, and an in-line microphone is included for calls.

Engineering and use context

The diaphragm is made using physical vapour deposition, in which titanium is deposited onto a polymer film to form a nanocrystalline surface layer before the part is moulded as one piece, increasing rigidity while keeping internal damping. The driver sits in a decentralised composite cavity with a high-frequency phased waveguide, a structure carried over from Moondrop's higher-priced Aria, and the cavity geometry was developed with finite element simulation and 3D-printed prototypes. The key engineering step is the DSP in the USB-C connector, which filters the signal's frequency response before digital-to-analogue conversion. This lets Moondrop correct acoustic limitations that a passive wired earphone cannot fix by physical means alone, bringing the response in line with the company's VDSF target. The shells are formed from alloy by melting and injection moulding for precise, durable housings, and Moondrop's patented anti-blocking filter keeps the acoustic balance stable as earwax builds up. Spring-type ear tips are supplied for a secure seal.

Pairing

The JIU connects directly to any USB-C phone, tablet or computer and works without drivers on Android, Windows and macOS. Because the DAC and DSP are built into the plug, it cannot be plugged into a 3.5mm headphone output or used with a separate dongle DAC, and the cable is fixed rather than detachable.
