The Audio-Technica ATH-AWX7000 is a closed-back dynamic headphone of the over-ear type, wired only, and designed and manufactured in Japan. It made its debut at the Paris Audio Video Show in October 2026 with a price of USD 3,799. The model brings together traditional Japanese woodworking and lacquer craft with a new closed-back acoustic design and a newly developed diaphragm, and it shares its transducer construction method with the open-back ATH-ADX7000.
Key specs that matter
The drivers are 58 mm dynamic units. Impedance is 48 ohms and sensitivity is 97 dB/mW, and the drivers accept up to 1,000 mW. Frequency response runs from 5 Hz to 50 kHz. The headphone weighs 353 g without its cable. The cable connects through A2DC sockets on the earcups, and two detachable eight-braid cables come in the box - a 2.5 m balanced lead terminated in a 4-pin Neutrik XLR plug and a 3.0 m unbalanced lead with a 6.3 mm stereo plug.
Engineering and use context
The new Hybrid Matrix Diaphragm (HMD) is a composite of thin polymer film and a metal dome. Audio-Technica enlarged the bonding area between the film and the dome so that stress at high input levels is spread out and the diaphragm keeps its shape. It is formed with HXDT (High-Concentricity X Dynamic Transducer), a precision process first used in the ATH-ADX7000, which aligns the baffle, magnet, voice coil and diaphragm. Audio-Technica says HXDT cuts manufacturing tolerances to one tenth of conventional levels, and that the HMD diaphragm formed this way vibrates as a single unit. The ATH-AWX7000 is also the first Audio-Technica model with TCbA (True Closed-back Acoustic), a design that works with the air pressure generated inside the enclosed earcups. The earcup housings are made of Kiso cypress and hand-finished with Echizen lacquer. The frame and arms are magnesium, the sliders are precision-machined aluminium, the earpads are covered in soft leather, and the padded headband is a new design intended for long sessions. A hard-shell metal carrying case lined with black foam is included.
Pairing
With moderate impedance and good efficiency, the ATH-AWX7000 is an easy load for most headphone outputs, including portable players and DAC-amplifiers, though a dedicated desktop amplifier gives more headroom. The supplied XLR lead connects directly to balanced desktop amplifiers, while the 6.3 mm lead suits standard single-ended sockets. Any replacement or upgrade cable needs A2DC plugs at the headphone end.
Alternatives
The Audio-Technica ATH-ADX7000 is the open-back over-ear model that shares the HXDT transducer process.
