The RT-5000 is a desktop unit from ROSESELSA, the brand also sold under the Rose Technics name, that combines a headphone amplifier with a full digital-to-analogue converter and a Bluetooth receiver in one compact case. It is priced at USD 650. Buyers can choose a black or a green version.

Key specs that matter

Into 32 ohm the balanced 4.4 mm socket delivers up to 1600 mW, twice the 800 mW available from the single-ended outputs. Distortion is quoted at -112 dB, or 0.0005 percent, SNR is 125 dB and channel separation is -115 dB. The converter accepts PCM up to 32 bit and 384 kHz and plays DSD256 natively, and the supported file list includes FLAC, WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless, APE, DXD and MQA. Digital inputs are USB-B, coaxial S/PDIF, optical Toslink and Bluetooth 5.1. The case is 191 x 144.5 x 40 mm and weighs about 823 g. A separate 15 V DC adapter rated at 3 A supplies the power.

Engineering and use context

Two ES9038Pro chips from ESS with HyperStream II architecture take care of the digital-to-analogue step. After them ten OPA1612 op-amps from Texas Instruments do the analogue work - eight run the current-to-voltage stage and two form the low-pass filter. The headphone stage is built around a pair of JRC MUSES01 op-amps with J-FET inputs. Bluetooth reception relies on the Qualcomm QCC5125 chip, which supports LDAC, aptX Adaptive, aptX HD, aptX Low Latency, aptX, AAC and SBC, so phones and tablets can stream without a cable. Seven digital filters built into the DAC can be selected, and there are four gain levels, a mute function and EQ presets, with level set by a volume potentiometer. The frame is CNC-machined from rigid aluminium alloy, the front carries a walnut wood-textured panel, and parts of the body are wrapped in first-layer cowhide with gold-plated details. USB-B to USB-C and USB-B to USB-A cables come in the box together with the mains adapter.

Pairing

Headphone owners with balanced cables get the higher output rating, while 3.5 mm and 6.35 mm jacks cover single-ended plugs. Laptops and desktop computers plug into the USB-B port, and a TV or CD transport can use the optical or coaxial input. Line outputs on RCA and balanced XLR allow the RT-5000 to feed active speakers or a stereo amplifier as a standalone converter.

Alternatives

The ROSESELSA RS9039 is a far smaller portable dongle DAC and headphone amplifier built on the ES9039Q2M chip.
