The Balanced MC Transformer is a passive step-up device from Remton Audio, handcrafted in Czechia. It raises the low output of moving-coil cartridges and is designed for use with the Remton balanced VLCR tube phono stage, allowing the phono chain to run fully balanced.
Key specs that matter
The transformer covers 5 Hz to 100 kHz at -3 dB. Two gain settings are provided - MC high gives 20 dB with a 1 to 10 turns ratio, and MC low gives 26 dB with a 1 to 20 ratio, so the step-up can be matched to higher and lower output cartridges. The chassis measures 386 x 295 x 85 mm.
Engineering and use context
Running the signal in balanced form gives common-mode rejection, so interference picked up along the way is cancelled, with lower noise and distortion as the stated result. Remton also offers the transformer together with Fonolab as part of a combined LCR tube phono stage and external balanced step-up package. The unit carries a 2-year parts and labour warranty.
