The Hyperion P1 is a valve line preamplifier from Canor, the Slovak company registered as Canor spol. s.r.o., and it was introduced in March 2022 as the intended partner for a pair of the brand's Virtus M1 monoblocks. It handles analogue signals only, with no built-in D/A converter, streaming module, phono stage or headphone output. The recommended launch price in Europe was EUR 11,000, a US price of USD 12,500 has also been quoted, and the unit is offered with black or silver casework.

Key specs that matter

Sources connect through four balanced XLR inputs and five RCA inputs, and one of the RCA sockets can be switched to act as a fixed-level pre-out. Outputs comprise two XLR pairs plus a single RCA pair. Gain is 11 dB at the XLR output, input impedance is 30 kohm and output impedance stays below 150 ohm. Frequency response is quoted as 10 Hz to 80 kHz within 0.1 dB. THD is below 0.005% at 1 kHz and 2 V RMS on the balanced output, and even at a 49 V RMS output it remains under 0.3%. Signal-to-noise exceeds 115 dB measured over a 20 Hz to 80 kHz band, and channel separation is listed as 110 dB. The case measures 450 x 190 x 465 mm.

Engineering and use context

Four 6922 double triodes and two 6H30PI valves make up the tube complement. Every stage is biased in Class A without overall negative feedback, and Canor developed a separate power supply specifically for this model. The layout is balanced from input all the way to the volume stage. Level is set by a 64-step balanced attenuator in 1 dB increments, and its control logic is galvanically isolated from the audio path through optical drivers. That attenuator sits inside its own aluminium box with walls 10 mm thick, and a solid aluminium partition of the same 10 mm thickness divides the signal circuitry from the power section. The whole chassis is aluminium, it rests on anti-vibration mounting pads, and spikes are supplied with the unit.

Pairing

The two balanced output pairs allow a single Hyperion P1 to feed both Virtus M1 monoblocks through XLR, and the case footprint of the two models is identical, so the three boxes stack or line up evenly on a rack. Its low source impedance allows the preamplifier to drive longer interconnect runs or a solid-state power amplifier with a conventional input impedance, and the RCA output covers amplifiers without balanced inputs. Vinyl playback needs an outboard phono stage feeding one of the line inputs, and digital sources require an outboard DAC.

Alternatives

Canor offers no other preamplifier, so the brand has no second model in this category.
