The P1 is a stereo Class D power amplifier from Boenicke Audio of Basel, Switzerland, and the first electronic product the loudspeaker company made commercially available. Its case is roughly the size of a Mac Mini. It is priced at CHF 3,762 in black powder coat, or CHF 3,991 in silver anodised aluminium, with a UK plug costing CHF 120 extra. Boenicke also makes the modular aio system, made up of amplifier, preamplifier, DAC and network switch modules, housed in cherry wood enclosures of 22 x 22 x 35.5 cm.
Key specs that matter
The P1 delivers 300 W into 8 ohm. Input impedance is 11.5 kOhm, and the inputs are ETI Research RCA sockets. Idle consumption is 11 W. The body is 69 mm high, rising to 75 mm at the power wheel, with footprint dimensions of 202 mm and 230 mm, and the amplifier weighs about 4.3 kg including a 1 m mains cable. The Schuko plug must be inserted with the correct polarity, marked by a red dot for the live contact.
Engineering and use context
The amplifier is built around a Powersoft Class D module that Boenicke tunes mechanically. On the mains side, a Chord Shawline mains cable is soldered directly into the amplifier with 10% silver solder, followed by three LessLoss Firewall filters, a custom soft-start circuit on an FR2 board and a Refine Audio fuse. On the signal side, Bybee Small GOLD Slipstream purifiers sit at the inputs, and three proprietary resonators control vibration inside the case. Internal wiring is LessLoss cotton-insulated cable. The chassis rests on Black Ravioli pads and has a solid walnut backplate. Soldering the mains cable in place removes the contact points of a mains socket and plug on the amplifier side. The Class D module keeps heat low, so the full output fits into a small case with low idle consumption. The relatively low input impedance suits solid-state preamplifiers and DACs with low output impedance. Its compact size allows the P1 to be placed close to the loudspeakers.
Pairing
The P1 is Boenicke's choice for its W5, W8 and W11 loudspeakers, whose modest sensitivity benefits from its power reserve. Any preamplifier with RCA outputs, or a DAC that has its own level control, can drive it.
Alternatives
The Boenicke aio is the modular system with a power amplifier module of 125 W into 8 ohm and optional preamplifier and DAC modules.
