The McIntosh MC462 is a stereo amplifier of solid-state design aimed at both stereo systems and home theater. It replaces the MC452 while keeping the same output rating, and McIntosh says a single unit can drive a complete high-end home stereo on its own.

Key specs that matter

Output is 450 W per channel into 2, 4 or 8 ohm loads, matching the FTC rating. Total harmonic distortion is 0.005%, the signal-to-noise ratio is 122 dB below rated output and dynamic headroom reaches 3.0 dB. The wideband damping factor is above 40. Response is within +0 and -0.25 dB across 20 Hz to 20 kHz and within +0 and -3.0 dB across 10 Hz to 100 kHz, with the rated power band covering 20 Hz to 20 kHz. The case is 44.5 cm wide, 24 cm high and 57.2 cm deep. It weighs 52.3 kg, with a shipping weight of 67.3 kg.

Engineering and use context

McIntosh built the MC462 around its Quad Balanced topology, which the company says cancels nearly all noise and distortion in the signal path. Each channel has a dedicated Autoformer, so the full rated power is available whatever the speaker impedance. Four Monogrammed Heatsinks carry high-current output transistors chosen to shorten the lag before thermal equilibrium is reached. Against the MC452, filter capacity grew by almost 50%, which raised dynamic headroom from 1.8 dB by 66%. Power Guard adjusts the input in real time so that clipping is avoided, and Sentry Monitor is a fuse-less guard that disengages the output stage whenever current goes beyond safe levels. New enclosures for the Autoformers and the power transformer have a machined cover with glass inserts, and internal wiring and selected circuit parts were upgraded. The chassis mixes polished stainless steel and black painted steel, and its black glass fascia has direct LED backlighting and an illuminated logo. Aluminium handles and knobs frame two fast-responding blue watt meters with a light switch. After long periods with no input the eco-friendly power management turns the unit off. Mono bridge and mono parallel modes are not available. The patented gold-plated Solid Cinch terminals clamp speaker cables and resist corrosion. A 3-year limited warranty applies.

Pairing

There are two balanced inputs, and balanced and unbalanced outputs allow bi-amping, tri-amping or feeding a secondary system or a powered subwoofer. The power control link sends on and off signals to other McIntosh components.

Alternatives

The McIntosh MC312 sits below it in the stereo solid-state range at 300 W per channel with Autoformer outputs.
