The Audio-Technica AT-LP7X is a fully manual belt-drive turntable from the Japanese company whose cartridges and tonearms go back to the 1960s. The box holds a complete set of tonearm, headshell, moving-magnet cartridge, built-in MM/MC phono preamplifier, dust cover, RCA cable and 45rpm adaptor. At the same time it is designed for owners who want to try other cartridges, with adjustable tonearm settings for that purpose. The finish is matte black.
Key specs that matter
A DC servo motor turns the platter by belt at 33 1/3 or 45rpm, with wow and flutter below 0.1% (WTD) and a signal-to-noise ratio above 60dB. The platter is 20mm-thick high-density acrylic and sits on a 40mm MDF plinth. The static-balanced J-shaped aluminium arm is 247mm long (effective), 15mm overhang, maximum tracking error below 2 degrees and a tracking-force range of 0 to 4g, and it accepts a combined cartridge and headshell weight of 14 to 28.5g depending on the subcounterweight. The AT-VM95E cartridge with a 0.3 x 0.7 mil elliptical stylus comes pre-mounted on an AT-LT10 headshell. The phono stage gives 36dB of gain for MM and 56dB for MC, with a phono output of 4mV and a line output of 252mV. The deck measures 450 x 352 x 157mm and weighs 7.6kg.
Engineering and use context
The dense MDF plinth and thick acrylic platter reduce resonance and vibration, and the high rotational inertia of the platter keeps speed steady with no mat needed. The stainless-steel spindle runs in a low-friction thermoplastic sheet bearing, and an optical sensor monitors platter rotation and corrects the motor speed. The motor sits on a vibration-damping mount, and spring isolation feet reduce vibration coming into the deck from outside. Audio-Technica worked on the chassis geometry, placing platter, spindle and tonearm so that the arm tracks across the record with minimal lateral error. The J-shaped arm takes its cue from the company's designs of the 1960s and 1970s and uses a dual-axis gimbal with precision ball bearings, with adjustable VTA, anti-skate, tracking force and overhang. The supplied 16g subcounterweight raises the usable cartridge and headshell weight to 23.5g, and an optional 32g weight takes it to the upper limit, while the detachable headshell makes cartridge swaps simple. The VM95E body accepts any VM95-series replacement stylus, so the stylus profile can be upgraded without changing the cartridge.
Pairing
With the phono stage set to line output, the AT-LP7X connects to any amplifier or powered speakers. With the stage bypassed, it can feed a dedicated MM or MC phono preamplifier, which leaves room for upgrades later.
Alternatives
Audio-Technica's own AT-LP5X is a lower-priced direct-drive deck which also has a J-shaped arm and its own phono preamplifier.
