The player uses top-loading technology, supports gapless playback, and is protected from ESP read errors. An optical output with a precision clock generator allows the Merak to be used as a digital transport: the CD-quality signal (16-bit/44.1 kHz) is transmitted directly to an external DAC without internal processing. A separate function allows CD ripping to a USB drive in WAV format (16-bit/44.1 kHz) with the touch of a button.
