The DISCDREAM2 is a battery-powered disc player from Moondrop, described by the maker as a second-generation product with upgraded audio circuitry, launched on 28 September 2024 alongside a more expensive ULTRA version. Its launch price was USD 149.99, lower than the first DISCDREAM. Moondrop presents it as a player that can be carried, used as a fixed CD source in a home system or connected to a computer as a DAC. The maker also notes that production is limited because the build is labour intensive.

Key specs that matter

One Cirrus Logic CS43131 chip does the conversion, fed in USB mode with PCM up to 32-bit and 384 kHz and with native DSD up to DSD256. The headphone jack is a 3.5 mm single-ended socket rated at 124 mW into 32 ohm and 2 Vrms. A second 3.5 mm socket works either as an analogue line output at 2 Vrms or as an optical digital output. Recordable and rewritable discs play along with pressed CDs. The 3500 mAh battery gives about 9 hours of disc playback, charged over USB-C at 5 V and 2 A. The body measures 169 x 154 x 32 mm.

Engineering and use context

The case opens as a clamshell with a clear lid, so the disc is dropped in from above instead of sliding into a tray. A small screen shows the track number, playback time and battery state. The finish is a soft-touch paint in a contrasting two-colour scheme. The transport sits on what Moondrop calls a professional CD servo architecture. Inside, an independent dual-channel headphone amplifier follows the DAC, and six linear voltage regulator chips power separate parts of the circuit. Protection against skipping combines an electronic buffer with an elastic damping mount for the transport, which Moondrop calls a double shock absorption design. In USB mode no driver installation is needed on Windows or macOS. The shared socket for optical and line signals lets the DISCDREAM2 feed a separate converter digitally or as an analogue source for a stereo amplifier.

Pairing

The modest single-ended output is best matched to in-ear monitors and sensitive on-ear headphones rather than large, hard-to-drive models, which are better served by an external headphone amplifier fed from the line output. For optical use a mini-Toslink plug or adapter is needed.
