Floorstanding loudspeakers — KEF Reference 3 Meta

The Reference 3 Meta is a three-way floorstanding loudspeaker from KEF's Reference series, the company's benchmark line since 1973. It uses the 12th-generation Uni-Q driver array with Metamaterial Absorption Technology, and every pair is matched within 0.5dB to a reference standard at KEF's factory in Maidstone, Kent before shipping.

Key specs that matter

The Uni-Q array combines a 25mm aluminium dome tweeter, backed by MAT, with a 125mm aluminium cone midrange, supported by two 165mm (6.5-inch) aluminium cone bass drivers. Crossover points are 450Hz and 2.1kHz. Frequency response is 43Hz to 35kHz (+/-3dB), with typical in-room bass extension to 28Hz. Sensitivity is 86dB, impedance is 4 ohms nominal with a 3.2-ohm minimum, and recommended amplification is 50 to 300W. The cabinet measures 1,207 x 323 x 467mm.

Engineering and use context

In the Uni-Q array, the 25mm dome sits in the throat of the 125mm cone, so treble and midrange share one radiating point and one dispersion pattern. Metamaterial Absorption Technology behind the tweeter absorbs about 99% of the unwanted rear wave, preventing it from reflecting back through the dome. The Shadow Flare surround reduces diffraction from the cabinet edges and extends the waveguide effect of the Uni-Q. The midrange cone works only between 450Hz and 2.1kHz, and the two bass drivers take over below, keeping each driver within its most linear range. The cabinet bracing geometry was optimised with finite element analysis, and Constrained Layer Damping converts residual panel vibration into heat. Flexible Port Technology allows the port configuration to be changed to suit a room, for example when the speaker must stand closer to a wall than ideal, which is also why KEF quotes a range of -6dB figures depending on port length. Each pair's individual matching to 0.5dB keeps the left and right channels closely aligned.

Pairing

With 86dB sensitivity and a 3.2-ohm minimum, the Reference 3 Meta needs an amplifier with strong current capability, and KEF's 50 to 300W range points to substantial solid-state integrated or power amplifiers. In medium to large rooms it provides full-range bass without a subwoofer, and its port options help integration in rooms where placement is limited. It also forms the front pair of a Reference-series home cinema system.
