The AE2 40th Anniversary Edition is a limited-run revival of the Acoustic Energy AE2 stand-mount loudspeaker, built in full 40th Anniversary specification by the company based in Tetbury, Gloucestershire. It uses the newly developed woofer and tweeter units first introduced in the AE1 40th Anniversary Edition and derives from the AE2 Signature model of the 1990s, with aesthetic detail chosen to stay sympathetic to the original. Production is limited to a set period, and the maker lists availability in Asia and in Europe from October 2026.

Key specs that matter

Built as a two-way design in an offset mid-tweeter-mid layout, it places two 125 mm mid/bass drivers flanking a 29 mm anodised aluminium dome tweeter. The crossover frequency is 2.2 kHz. Acoustic Energy gives a frequency range of 35 Hz to 45 kHz within plus or minus 6 dB, a sensitivity of 88 dB at 2.83 V and 1 metre, a nominal impedance of 6 ohms and power handling of 200 watts. Each cabinet measures 385 x 235 x 315 mm (height, width, depth) and weighs 14.5 kg. Buyers choose between two high gloss finishes, black or walnut.

Engineering and use context

Against the first AE2, the woofer diaphragm has grown a little to follow today's norm, and its greater radiating area gives slightly higher efficiency and lower distortion. The cone is spun aluminium hard anodised with a thick ceramic layer on both sides. The tweeter gains a larger voice coil that supports a slightly larger aluminium dome, and like the first AE2 it is cooled and damped with ferrofluid. The crossover takes its cues from the Signature version, and keeps to minimal, low-order filtering. The maker aims the model at purist listeners and states that the cabinet was tuned to match the character of the original AE2. The enclosure is an RSC constrained-layer construction of HDF and bitumen in thicknesses of 18 to 32 mm, braced and lined at chosen points with 3 mm steel plates, and it is reflex loaded by three ports. The paint finish is built up from ten coats, and the cloth grilles attach magnetically.

Acoustic Energy positions the AE2 40th Anniversary for rooms larger than around 25 m2, picking up where the AE1 40th Anniversary leaves off in output. The moderate load and sensitivity allow a broad choice of integrated or pre and power amplifiers, and the power handling rating sets an upper bound for amplifier power.
